DESCRIPTION:Sir John Monash GCMG KCB VDJohn Monash\, compassionate leader\, cared in war and peace for his men who came from every state and territory of Australia. He planned and won the innovative Battle of Hamel and then in the highly successful Battle of Amiens on 8 Aug 1918 (0808)\, the Australians turned the tide of WW1 impacting the outcome of the War bringing it to an end in 3 months\, far earlier than anyone expected. On 12 Aug 1918 King Geo V knighted Monash in the field at his Bertangles HQ. Monash‚Äô meticulous planning\, drawn from his legal\, engineering and musical backgrounds ‚Äì he likened work to conducting an orchestra ‚Äì was a measure of his overall life success. DESCRIPTION:The John Duigan Memorial Lecture is held annually by the Aviation Historical Society of Australia to commemorate the first flight\, by John Robertson Duigan on 16th July 1910\, of an aeroplane designed and built in Australia\, and to discuss other significant events in the history of Australian aviation.\nSteve Campbell-Wright is the author of the recently-published book “An Interesting Point – A History of Military Aviation at Point Cook 1914-2014”. He will talk about what has happened at RAAF Point Cook over the past 100 years. Having lived at Point Cook for almost a quarter of a century and with a passion for social history\, Steve has a deep insight into the military presence at Point Cook and the place’s significance to Australian military and civil aviation. The Lecture will be held at the RAAF Association\, 24 Camberwell Rd\, Hawthorn East. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the Lecture. DESCRIPTION:Victorians are invited to an informative evening of local and international military heritage news\, as the Royal Historical Society of Victoria welcomes the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria\, Tim Smith.To be held on Tuesday 19 May at 5.45pm\, Tim will discuss the work being done to protect and celebrate military heritage sites\, both here in Victoria and in parts of Turkey. \n“Heritage Victoria has been working hard to actively protect military heritage sites around the State\, and I’ll provide an insight into our various initiatives – from interactive self-guided heritage tours to innovative 3D scanning of key sites\,” noted Tim. \n“I’ll also share highlights from my longstanding private volunteer involvement in international archaeological projects related to war heritage sites.” \nA site Tim has been heavily involved in is Australia’s Gallipoli submarine site РAE2 (1913-1915) Рlocated near the Turkish Dardanelles. \nTim will discuss the findings of the recent archaeological expedition to the site\, including the archaeological approvals process\, the methodology developed to investigate the internal areas of AE2 with least impact\, and the research questions answered by this internationally unique scientific survey of a World War One British E-class submarine. \n“Our discussion will explore the heritage value of AE2 to both Turkey and Australia\, the historical role it played in the Battle of Canakkale (The Dardanelles Campaign)\, and the new appreciation for the craft and its brave crew that has been generated through the Foundation’s work\,” explained Tim. \n“I’ll also illustrate a private project led at Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay in 2010 to map the underwater battlefield cultural landscape. \n“And I’ll share highlights from a recent joint initiative with Turkish colleagues inspecting World War One submarine wrecks in Port Phillip Bay.”\nAbout the speaker\nTim Smith is the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria and delivers the functions of the Heritage Act 1995 Рincluding nominations for places and objects for inclusion on the State-level Victorian Heritage Register (VHR)\, permits for changes to listed items\, and management of the State’s archaeological resource. SUMMARY:For King and Country: East Melbourne and the Great War
DESCRIPTION:When Britain declared war in August 1914\, Australians reacted with enormous patriotism. Young men in their thousands signed up to serve in what would be a long drawn out and bloody conflict in which 60\,000 young Australians died\, about one in ten of all men aged between 18 and 40. Young women\, too\, volunteered to serve as nurses\, often ahead of their brothers. Though only a small suburb\, there were over 770 with some connection Рbirth\, work\, housing – to East Melbourne.\nOn 16 October\, the East Melbourne Historical Society will open an exhibition recalling the life and service of some of those who volunteered. Called ‘For King and Country’\, it will commemorate the service of sixteen volunteers who served in World War 1 at Gallipoli\, Egypt\, France\, Belgium and the minor theatres of war. \nThe exhibition will be free and open to the public from 17 October-11 November at the East Melbourne Library\, 122 George St\, East Melbourne.

SUMMARY:D-Day Experiences of an RN Commando
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker is Commander Jim Speed DSC RAN Ret.\n70 years ago\, Jim Speed was a young Sub/Lt Commando on Sword Beach Red. \nThe Commandos job was to land on the beach prior to the landing craft and assist the unloading of troops by holding the landing craft staying ‘bows on the beach’. Thus it was that Jim met the first wave of the landing come in to the beach\, observing history being made whilst under fire! \nJim’s first day also involved helping with the removal of the obstacles and marking the location of sunken landing craft. The first night\, and the two after\, they had to man the perimeter trenches in readiness for the expected counter attack. There was still a lot of the enemy not far away! \nThis is a brief summary of just part of Jim Speed’s story. After the war Jim rejoined the Royal Navy. Intrigued????. Indeed there is much more to tell . \nJim Speed was awarded his DSC for his services in Normandy!! The 30-minute talk will be followed by Q&A with Jill Singer. \nACM Angus Houston was the Chief of the Defence Force from 4 July 2005 until 4 July 2011\, when he retired from the military after 41 years of service. In 2011\, Angus was named the Australian Father of the Year and in 2012 the ACT Australian of the Year. Angus was Chair of the Anzac Centenary Advisory Board from July 2011 until March 2014. SUMMARY:INTERFET: Reflections on the 1999 East Timor Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Following the vote in favour of self-determination in 1999 chaos engulfed East Timor. Dozens  of buildings burned\, thousands of people were displaced from their  homes and some were injured or killed. World-wide outrage denounced the  horror and demanded “something must be done!” Within days a UN mandated  Australian-led multi-national force named ‘INTERFET’ (International  Force East Timor) arrived on 20 September 1999 with Indonesian agreement  and support to restore security and order. \n \nWhat was the crisis and how did it come about? What events led to it?  What factors were influencing events? What did INTERFET achieve or fail  to achieve? How did the crisis impact on relationships in the region in  the short and longer term?  What can the INTERFET experience teach us  for the future? \nOn the 15th Anniversary of the 1999 crisis in East Timor – this  two-day international conference will initiate the process of examining  these and other questions. The aim of the conference is to write into  the public record different perspectives and responses to the long  dormant questions for the benefit and further development of history and  scholarship. \nIn the absence of an Australian official history\, and with relations  between Indonesia\, Australia and Timor Leste in need of greater  understanding and enrichment\, key participants in the events of that  period are gathering together at the prestigious RACV Club in Melbourne  on 20 and 21 September 2014 to reflect on the significance of INTERFET  then and since. \nMilitary History and Heritage Victoria in partnership with the  Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the ANU have gathered an  impressive array of speakers – most of whom were involved first hand at  the international\, national and operational levels. \nThe two keynote speakers are His Excellency the Prime Minister of Timor Leste\, Xanana Gusmao\, and His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia (the former Commander of INTERFET). \nThe international panel of distinguished speakers includes Lieutenant  General Kiki Syahnakri (Retired) who was the Indonesian Martial Law  Administrator at the time of the crisis\, and author of Timor Timur: The  Untold Story; Major General Orlando Ambrocio (Retired) who was the  Commander of the Philippines Humanitarian Support Mission to East Timor;  Colonel Kevin Burnett\, ONZM (Retired)\, former Commanding Officer the 1  RNZIR Battalion Group; and Major General Surasit Thanadtang. \nSpeakers from the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the ANU  include Admiral Chris Barrie (Retired)\, former Chief of the Australian  Defence Force\, and Doctor John Blaxland\, former Intelligence Officer for  West Force\, INTERFET. \nDoctor Blaxland\, whose recently published book The Australian Army  from Whitlam to Howard included a chapter on INTERFET\, will edit the  conference proceedings for publication. Doctor John Blaxland said that  “the conference is even more important given the absence of an official  Australian history for INTERFET.” \nLieutenant General Ash Power\, AO\, CSC (Retired)\, former Colonel  Operations INTERFET; Lieutenant General Mark Evans\, AO DSC (Retired)\,  former Commander WESTFOR\, INTERFET; Brigadier Jeff Wilkinson\, AM  (Retired)\, former Commander Logistic Support Force; Professor Damien  Kingsbury\, author of East Timor: The Price of Liberty; and Associate  Professor Bob Breen\, author of Mission Accomplished\, East Timor: The ADF  Participation in INTERFET will also be speaking at the Conference. \nAssociate Professor Bob Breen acknowledged that much additional  information had come to light over the past 14 years that warranted a  review of events\, causation and unintended consequences surrounding  INTERFET. “It’s important to get the benefit of time and the  perspectives of different stakeholders to get a holistic understanding  of these historic events” said Professor Breen. \nThe Conference will be held in the prestigious Pavilion Room at the  RACV Club in Melbourne on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September 2014. \nThe full Conference Program is available here. \nThe Conference ticket pricing is as follows: \n\nMHHV Member An individual or organisation member of MHHV Inc.                 $150.00 \nGeneral Admission Not a member of MHHV Inc. or a concession card holder   $190.00 \nConcession Card Holder Must produce concession card on registration            $110.00 \nThe ticket price includes morning tea\, buffet lunch\, afternoon tea and complimentary Wi-Fi on both days of the Conference.
