DESCRIPTION:RHSV Lecture: A Sense of Place: Australian Style in the Post War Years\, Ellis Stones\, Gordon Ford\, Betty Maloney and Jean Walker\nDr Anne Vale will discuss the new breed of designers to emerge after World War II who accepted\, valued and embraced the Australian landscape and Australian flora.These alternative garden-makers\, led by Peter Glass\, Alistair Knox and Gordon Ford\, amongst others\, had a different perspective of the Australian landscape than their prewar predecessors. The natural landscape designers of the middle years\, Stones\, Ford and Maloney and Walker\, crystallised and expressed the perspectives of their times\, but did so in significantly different ways. \nDr Anne Vale is an author and lecturer in Australian Garden History with a focus on 20th century practitioners. She is an active member of the Australian Garden History Society\, a passionate gardener and photographer. As the principal of consulting practice Heriscapes\, Anne enjoys assessing and researching ‘gardens with history’. Anne has published garden guides and histories on significant heritage gardens such as Dalvui\, Wirruna Nursery\, Durrol and the Kyneton Botanic Garden. Her latest book\, Exceptional Australian Garden Makers (Lothian Publishers)\, was launched at the Australian Garden History Society Conference in October 2013. It is typical of Anne’s significant research relating to exceptional Australian garden people – horticulturalists\, writers\, designers and philosophers. DESCRIPTION:The Royal United Services Institute of Victoria is pleased to present: Hugh Dolan\nHugh Dolan is a Squadron Leader in the Australian Air Force\, a life that he enjoys and recommends to others. \nHe is currently researching the air battles over Gallipoli at the Australian Defence Force Academy. \nHe has worked in minor headquarters roles in Australia and overseas. He describes his military service to be within range of map tables and the coffee percolator. \nHis military career started 15 years ago with enlistment in the British Army as a private. He served in Bosnia as a junior NCO and witnessed the importance of military intelligence in operational planning. \nHe confesses that he initially joined the army after barely graduating with a masters degree in history from Oxford University to pay overdue bills and to see how history is written. \n \nDefence security policy requires you to advise the RUSI Office of your attendance and the name of all your guests\, either by email to martin.holme@defence.gov.au or phone 9282 5918. DESCRIPTION:Margaret Findlay Commemorative Lecture – “Sleuthing Military History”Lynette Ramsay Silver is a renowned historian and author of several acclaimed books on Australian military history.\nLynette held the position of official Historian to the Australian 8th Division Association from 1995-2002. She became the first civilian to receive a Defence Forces Commendation and Medal from Special Operations Command Australia\, for her work during the 60th Anniversary of Operation Jaywick in 2003. In 2004 Lynette was awarded an OAM in the Australia Day Honours for her services to Sandakan veterans and their families. She has also received a Minister‚Äôs Special Award for her research work from the Sabah Government in 2009\, an unusual honour for a foreigner. \nBesides researching and writing and indexing her books\, Lynette is also known for her detective skills. Rear Admiral Tim Barrett AM CSC RAN will present “The significance of the arrival of the Royal Australian Navy’s first fleet” \nThe Fleet Commander approved HMAS Yarra IV arriving in order to attend the Creswell Oration 2014 when its CO & XO and 18 crew members will be our special guests. We acknowledge the historic honour about to be bestowed on their ship and on them. This long awaited Ship Gallantry Citation recognises the heroic service of the RAN’s small sloop HMAS Yarra II as it took on a Japanese task force of three cruisers and two destroyers. Port Melbourne’s LS Ron “Buck Taylor” stayed at his gun\, after ‘abandon ship’\, loading aiming and firing until K.I.A. He gave time for many crew members to abandon ship. After 5 days 13 survivors were rescued by Dutch submarine KXI commanded by Andre Bruinhout. Vice Admiral Russ Shalders stated “Yarra’s last fight was the Gold Standard of the RAN’s purpose.” Creswell would have been proud of the brave men of 1942 who fought to protect our right to live as a nation of free people by playing their part in the Battle for Australia. \nTIME: 1200 for 1230 \nDATE: Friday 28th.
