DESCRIPTION:Margaret Findlay Commemorative Lecture – “Sleuthing Military History”Lynette Ramsay Silver is a renowned historian and author of several acclaimed books on Australian military history.\nLynette held the position of official Historian to the Australian 8th Division Association from 1995-2002. She became the first civilian to receive a Defence Forces Commendation and Medal from Special Operations Command Australia\, for her work during the 60th Anniversary of Operation Jaywick in 2003. In 2004 Lynette was awarded an OAM in the Australia Day Honours for her services to Sandakan veterans and their families. She has also received a Minister‚Äôs Special Award for her research work from the Sabah Government in 2009\, an unusual honour for a foreigner. \nBesides researching and writing and indexing her books\, Lynette is also known for her detective skills. DESCRIPTION:The conference\, convened by Military History and Heritage Victoria Inc.\, will be held at the Pompey Elliot Memorial Hall\, Camberwell RSL\, on 30 May 2015. \nThis one day conference\, held close to the 50th anniversary of the first national servicemen entering Army in the Vietnam period\, examines the history\, politics\, controversy and experience of compulsory military service in critical periods of Australia’s history. Rear Admiral Tim Barrett AM CSC RAN will present “The significance of the arrival of the Royal Australian Navy’s first fleet” \nThe Fleet Commander approved HMAS Yarra IV arriving in order to attend the Creswell Oration 2014 when its CO & XO and 18 crew members will be our special guests. We acknowledge the historic honour about to be bestowed on their ship and on them. This long awaited Ship Gallantry Citation recognises the heroic service of the RAN’s small sloop HMAS Yarra II as it took on a Japanese task force of three cruisers and two destroyers. Port Melbourne’s LS Ron “Buck Taylor” stayed at his gun\, after ‘abandon ship’\, loading aiming and firing until K.I.A. He gave time for many crew members to abandon ship. After 5 days 13 survivors were rescued by Dutch submarine KXI commanded by Andre Bruinhout. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of original\, iconic images by legendary war photographer Tim Page.Sale proceeds to ‘Soldier On’  and NVVM.\nThis amazing range of images comes from Tim’s earliest interaction with the Australian troops soon after arrival in Vietnam in 1965.  The troops were almost all regular Army\, and were mainly from the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment\, which was placed with a US Army unit\, the 173rd Airborne Brigade. With World War Two equipment and a very different operating philosophy to the Americans – these images show the fresh new face of Australia in Vietnam. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this compelling lecture recounting the lives of eight remarkable nurses whose resilience\, courage and skill took them from Australia to Gallipoli\, Lemnos and the Western Front.\nThese women\, represented in Susanna de Vries’ reprinted publication\, Australian Heroines of World War One\, had the courage and strength for which the Anzacs are renowned and the compassion and tenderness that only a woman can bring. \nSister Hilda Samsing from Melbourne became a whistle-blower when nursing aboard the hospital ship Gascon\, outraged by the bungled evacuation of wounded ANZACs. She defied censorship and kept a very frank diary. Brisbane’s Grace Wilson\, ordered to establish an emergency hospital on drought-stricken Lemnos Island\, arrived there to find suffering ANZACs but no drinking water\, tents or medical supplies. In France\, Florence James- Wallace\, Anne Donnell and Elsie Tranter nursed near the front line in Casualty Clearing Stations\, treating soldiers with hideous wounds or blinded by mustard gas. \nThese are just a few of the stories that will be explored by Susanna in her talk which will bring light to the remarkable work of Australian nurses in the First World War. \nPresenter: Susanna de Vries \nDate: Tuesday 15 April\, 12.30pm start \nCost: FREE\, gold coin donation welcome

DESCRIPTION:Mrs. Elizabeth Chen is the daughter of Squadron Leader Douglas W Leckie OBE AFC\, and she will talk about her father’s aviation career.\nThe President of the Aviation Historical Society of Australia Inc. Mr Antony Grage\, and the AHSA Committee invite you and your spouse\, partner or friend to attend the 2013 John Duigan Memorial Lecture on Wednesday 27th November 2013 to be delivered by Mrs Elizabeth Chen at the RAAF Association\, 24 Camberwell Rd\, Hawthorn East commencing at 7.30pm. \nThe John Duigan Memorial Lecture is held annually by the Aviation Historical Society of Australia to commemorate the first flight\, by John Robertson Duigan on 16th July 1910\, of an aeroplane designed and built in Australia\, and to discuss other significant events in the history of Australian aviation. \nMrs. Elizabeth Chen is the daughter of Squadron Leader Douglas W Leckie OBE AFC\, and she will talk about her father’s aviation career. Doug Leckie was born in June 1920. He got his private pilot licence at 16 years\, by 1938 he was a flying instructor and during World War II he flew with 24 and 4 Squadron RAAF in New Guinea. After the war he returned to instructing\, then rejoined the RAAF in 1951\, and did three tours with the RAAF Antarctic Flight\, in the summer 1953/54\, wintering 1956 and the summer Wilkes Expedition in 1958/59. In the 1970/71 and 1971/72 summers he again went to Antarctica with ANARE. He was awarded the AFC\, OBE\, Oswald Watt Medal and Polar Medal in recognition of his work in Antarctica. \nThe Lecture will be held at the RAAF Association\, 24 Camberwell Rd\, Hawthorn East\, on Wednesday 27th November commencing at 7.30pm. \nRefreshments will be served at the conclusion of the Lecture. \nParking is available in Camberwell Road\, or under the building – enter from the lane at the south-east end. \nA number of AHSA members meet casually for dinner at 6.00pm at the Tower Hotel opposite the RAAF Association\, and you would be most welcome to join us there. \nRSVP \nPlease reply by 23rd November\, by email to agrage@bigpond.net.au or by phoning 0418 170 395. \nWe hope you can come\, and look forward to seeing you on the 27th of November.
