Rear Admiral Tim Barrett AM CSC RAN will present “The significance of the arrival of the Royal Australian Navy’s first fleet” \nThe Fleet Commander approved HMAS Yarra IV arriving in order to attend the Creswell Oration 2014 when its CO & XO and 18 crew members will be our special guests. We acknowledge the historic honour about to be bestowed on their ship and on them. This long awaited Ship Gallantry Citation recognises the heroic service of the RAN’s small sloop HMAS Yarra II as it took on a Japanese task force of three cruisers and two destroyers. Port Melbourne’s LS Ron “Buck Taylor” stayed at his gun\, after ‘abandon ship’\, loading aiming and firing until K.I.A. He gave time for many crew members to abandon ship. After 5 days 13 survivors were rescued by Dutch submarine KXI commanded by Andre Bruinhout. The troops were almost all regular Army\, and were mainly from the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment\, which was placed with a US Army unit\, the 173rd Airborne Brigade. With World War Two equipment and a very different operating philosophy to the Americans – these images show the fresh new face of Australia in Vietnam. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this compelling lecture recounting the lives of eight remarkable nurses whose resilience\, courage and skill took them from Australia to Gallipoli\, Lemnos and the Western Front.\nThese women\, represented in Susanna de Vries’ reprinted publication\, Australian Heroines of World War One\, had the courage and strength for which the Anzacs are renowned and the compassion and tenderness that only a woman can bring. \nSister Hilda Samsing from Melbourne became a whistle-blower when nursing aboard the hospital ship Gascon\, outraged by the bungled evacuation of wounded ANZACs. She defied censorship and kept a very frank diary. Brisbane’s Grace Wilson\, ordered to establish an emergency hospital on drought-stricken Lemnos Island\, arrived there to find suffering ANZACs but no drinking water\, tents or medical supplies. Mr Antony Grage\, and the AHSA Committee invite you and your spouse\, partner or friend to attend the 2013 John Duigan Memorial Lecture on Wednesday 27th November 2013 to be delivered by Mrs Elizabeth Chen at the RAAF Association\, 24 Camberwell Rd\, Hawthorn East commencing at 7.30pm. \nThe John Duigan Memorial Lecture is held annually by the Aviation Historical Society of Australia to commemorate the first flight\, by John Robertson Duigan on 16th July 1910\, of an aeroplane designed and built in Australia\, and to discuss other significant events in the history of Australian aviation. \nMrs. Elizabeth Chen is the daughter of Squadron Leader Douglas W Leckie OBE AFC\, and she will talk about her father’s aviation career. Doug Leckie was born in June 1920. He got his private pilot licence at 16 years\, by 1938 he was a flying instructor and during World War II he flew with 24 and 4 Squadron RAAF in New Guinea. After the war he returned to instructing\, then rejoined the RAAF in 1951\, and did three tours with the RAAF Antarctic Flight\, in the summer 1953/54\, wintering 1956 and the summer Wilkes Expedition in 1958/59. In the 1970/71 and 1971/72 summers he again went to Antarctica with ANARE. SUMMARY:Celebrating 20 Years Of Common Interest In The Anglo Boer War
DESCRIPTION:An Anglo Boer war conference  will be held at the Manningham council function centre\, Doncaster\, Melbourne over the weekend of the 26th and 27th October 2013.\nAlthough the occasion is being celebrated and organised by the Anglo Boer war study group\, you do not have to be a member to enjoy the occasion with us. \nOn Saturday 26th there will be a series of talks at the above venue. There will also be a display of Boer war memorabilia and publications for sale. \nOn Sunday 27th there will be a field trip which will include visits to the Victoria barracks\, memorials and grave sites. Speakers have been organised for these visits. \nThere will be an informal get-together for pre-conference drinks at the Box Hill RSL on the Friday night. \nThe cost of admission to the conference is $25 for the two days. It does not include Friday drinks or refreshment costs on Saturday and Sunday. It does however include the cost of morning and afternoon teas on Saturday. \nColonel Neil Smith will act as Master-of-Ceremonies. SUMMARY:Defence – ‘Whither or Wither’
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker will be Commodore J S Dickson AM\, MBE\, RAN (Ret’d).\nWebster’s Dictionary defines the word ‘odyssey’ as describing a ‘long journey with adventures’. \nJim Dickson has been on a sailor’s odyssey since he joined our RAN as a 13 year old Cadet Midshipman in January 1950. His long journey encompassed sea training in both the RAN and RN\, operational service in Malaysian and Vietnam waters as part of the far Eastern Strategic Reserve during the Malayan Emergency\, service in the Vietnam war in both HMAS PERTH II and HMAS SYDNEY III\, and in HMAS GULL during Confrontation with Indonesia in 1965-66. \nCommodore Dickson commanded 3 ships\, the Minesweeper HMAS Gull in 65-66\, the frigate HMAS YARRA III in 75-76\, and the Guided Missile destroyer HMAS BRISBANE II in 80-82. His shore appointments included 2 years both as CO of HMAS CERBERUS\, and as Naval Officer Commanding Victoria in 1988-90 . \nJim Dickson’s career has taken him from Macquarie Island to Finland\, and from Japan to the West Indies. His Naval service began at CERBERUS in 1950 and ended there 41 years later there in 1990. Certainly: ‘A Long Journey with Many Adventures!’ \nJim’s topic may well intrigue you\, but it will be well worth hearing! In the years since he left the service he has been involved in a variety of ex-service organisations. Jim has always had the interests of his beloved Royal Australian Navy\, the defence of his country\, and the “Naval’ family at large to the fore in all his endeavors. Don’t miss hearing what he has to say!
