DESCRIPTION:An Anglo Boer war conference  will be held at the Manningham council function centre\, Doncaster\, Melbourne over the weekend of the 26th and 27th October 2013.\nAlthough the occasion is being celebrated and organised by the Anglo Boer war study group\, you do not have to be a member to enjoy the occasion with us. \nOn Saturday 26th there will be a series of talks at the above venue. There will also be a display of Boer war memorabilia and publications for sale. \nOn Sunday 27th there will be a field trip which will include visits to the Victoria barracks\, memorials and grave sites. Speakers have been organised for these visits. \nThere will be an informal get-together for pre-conference drinks at the Box Hill RSL on the Friday night. \nThe cost of admission to the conference is $25 for the two days. It does not include Friday drinks or refreshment costs on Saturday and Sunday. It does however include the cost of morning and afternoon teas on Saturday. \nColonel Neil Smith will act as Master-of-Ceremonies. DESCRIPTION:Our speaker will be Commodore J S Dickson AM\, MBE\, RAN (Ret’d).\nWebster’s Dictionary defines the word ‘odyssey’ as describing a ‘long journey with adventures’. \nJim Dickson has been on a sailor’s odyssey since he joined our RAN as a 13 year old Cadet Midshipman in January 1950. His long journey encompassed sea training in both the RAN and RN\, operational service in Malaysian and Vietnam waters as part of the far Eastern Strategic Reserve during the Malayan Emergency\, service in the Vietnam war in both HMAS PERTH II and HMAS SYDNEY III\, and in HMAS GULL during Confrontation with Indonesia in 1965-66. \nCommodore Dickson commanded 3 ships\, the Minesweeper HMAS Gull in 65-66\, the frigate HMAS YARRA III in 75-76\, and the Guided Missile destroyer HMAS BRISBANE II in 80-82. His shore appointments included 2 years both as CO of HMAS CERBERUS\, and as Naval Officer Commanding Victoria in 1988-90 . \nJim Dickson’s career has taken him from Macquarie Island to Finland\, and from Japan to the West Indies. His Naval service began at CERBERUS in 1950 and ended there 41 years later there in 1990. Certainly: ‘A Long Journey with Many Adventures!’ \nJim’s topic may well intrigue you\, but it will be well worth hearing! In the years since he left the service he has been involved in a variety of ex-service organisations. Jim has always had the interests of his beloved Royal Australian Navy\, the defence of his country\, and the “Naval’ family at large to the fore in all his endeavors. Don’t miss hearing what he has to say! DESCRIPTION:Despite the focus on the Gallipoli campaign\, little is known about the experiences of the Australians captured at Gallipoli and imprisoned in Turkey for 3 ½ years. Based on ten years of research in the Australian\, British and Turkish archives\, this presentation examines the identity of these men\, their various experiences in Turkey and challenges some of the myths that developed about them – that few returned home and that their experiences were similar to those experienced by the POWs captured by the Japanese in the Second World War.\nDr Jennifer Lawless is currently the manager of History curriculum in NSW. She was granted two Australian Military History scholarships and an Endeavour Fellowship to research the topic in Australia\, Britain and Turkey. SUMMARY:Conserving Australia's Overseas War Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Most cultural heritage is difficult to protect against development pressures. The fact that Australia’s war heritage lies mostly in other people’s countries makes the conservation and management of significant sites and sometimes related artefacts even more difficult. Using illustrated examples from the two World Wars (Gallipoli\, Thai-Burma Railway) and the Korean and Vietnam Wars (Kapyong\, Long Tan)\, this talk shows how delicate negotiations at the international level have been required to enable this heritage to be recognised and protected for current and future Australians.\nWilliam (Bill) Logan is Professor Emeritus and UNESCO Chair of Heritage and Urbanism in Deakin University’s Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pacific. He is a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia\, member of the Heritage Council of Victoria and co-editor of the Routledge ‘Key Issues in Cultural Heritage’ book series. DESCRIPTION:In March 1942\, Australia was on its knees. The Japanese were swarming southward\, Darwin had been bombed\, and the vast majority of Australia’s best troops were overseas fighting the Germans. Fear of invasion was very real…\nThen ships arrived at Port Melbourne bringing the first of hundreds of thousands of American troops to Victoria. It was a friendly invasion. They arrived like the cavalry in the old Hollywood western movies; “Just in the nick of time”. The “Yanks” came to train to fight the Japanese. They brought with them a boiling desire to “avenge Pearl Harbour” but also new things like swing music\, coca cola\, nylon stockings\, and a whole different version of the English language. They even brought their own serial killer. DESCRIPTION:By 1914\, a small number of determined women had been graduating from the Melbourne Medical School for 23 years and there were almost 130 women registered as medical practitioners in Australia. From the declaration of war in August 1914\, the male medical fraternity enlisted enthusiastically across the country and women doctors were just as keen to offer their skills and experience.\nTheir attempts to enlist\, however\, were met with firm rebuttals by military authorities in Australia\, New Zealand\, Britain\, Canada and America. SUMMARY:Graves Too Far Away: Australians in Bomber Command
DESCRIPTION:Six Australians\, aged between 20 and 25 should have been standing in an Aussie backyard the day before Christmas 1944\, drinking a cold beer and burning sausages on the barbeque. Their conversation should have been about the Boxing Day Test. Instead these young men with bright futures were at RAF Binbrook being briefed for an operation to bomb rail yards at Cologne. Their Lancaster exploded near the Dutch town of Oostelbeers. Stark white tombstones mark their graves. An elderly man in the nation on the other side of the world considers a photo of the tombstones and speaks tenderly of a brother he has missed for seventy years. But he smiles at the knowledge that children of St Joseph’s School\, care for the graves – the small sign they placed nearby reads “Bedankt” (Thank you).\nBy war’s end several thousand Australian aircrew would lie in European cemeteries or would never be found. Their families\, communities and nation would struggle with the loss of so much human potential and\, graves too far away. SUMMARY:What became of the Anzacs?
DESCRIPTION:In the lead up to the Centenary of the Great War\, the Australian and New Zealand governments will embark on a great initiative\, one destined to change the way that conflict is remembered. ‘Project Albany’ will involve the digitisation of tens of thousands of repatriation files\, charting what happened to the diggers who came home.  What became of the casualties of war:  the gassed\, the blind\, the crippled\, the insane?  Who cared for them?  How did they cope with the trauma of war?  And did Australian servicemen and women return to the ‘Land Fit for Heroes’ they were promised?  The digitisation of service records will open a new chapter in our understanding of war.  Thousands of Australians\, young and old\, have consulted War Service Dossiers on the National Archives Website but this new resource will enable families to chart the life of a relative through the post war period – and to see his battle didn’t end when the guns stopped firing.\nJoin historian Professor Bruce Scates on a journey through one of the richest historical records available for World War One.  Professor Scates leads the 100 Stories Project at Monash University.  He wrote the history of the Shrine\, A Place to Remember\, and is currently researching the history of Soldier Settlement and the history of Anzac Day. SUMMARY:The Enemy Within  Internment and Prisoner of War Camps in Victoria 1939-47 - Last Week
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the experiences of prisoners of war and civilian  internees in Victoria during the Second World War (1939-45) and discover  a little known aspect of Australia’s history. This exhibition explores the impacts on prisoners of war and internees  who lived and worked in camps. Between 1939 and 1947 rural Victoria  hosted eight internment and prisoner of war camps from the network that  was scattered across Australia. The camps operated as communities and  incorporated canteens\, hospitals\, dental and recreational facilities and  schools.\nBy 1947 almost 26\,000 prisoners of war and 15\,000 internees had  experienced the camp system\, living in tin huts behind barbed wire. They  were known as the ‘enemy’ or ‘enemy aliens’. The notion of nationality  became a divise issue of war on the home front and the experience of  internment would have a lasting impact on Australia’s migrant and wider  community.

DESCRIPTION:An international conference at the Australian War MemorialThursday 15 ‚Äì Friday 16 August 2013 \nThe Vietnam War continues to cast a long shadow. At the height of the Cold War it dominated global attention for over a decade. Although the war\nended almost 40 years ago\, it confronted political leaders\, military commanders\, and soldiers in the field with dilemmas that are still relevant today. Controversy over military intervention and the conduct of the war generated deep divisions in political and cultural life and left an indelible impact on American and Australian society. The war also shaped Australian and US defence and foreign policy for a generation and left lingering after-effects in Vietnam and the neighbouring nations of South-east Asia. \nMany questions remain about the war: whether the strategic goals were relevant or attainable\, whether the tactics employed were effective or appropriate\, and whether the morality\, cost and consequences of the long war could be justified by either side. \nThis conference will gather leading historians\, authors\, former war correspondents\, and veterans from Australia and overseas to bring multinational perspectives to bear on these and other questions as they reflect on the course and conduct of the military struggle\, and the enduring memory of the conflict. DESCRIPTION:Captain Martin Holme\, late of the ‘Royal Highland Fusiliers‚Äô\, ‘Princess Margaret’s own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment.’\nLt Col Winston Churchill commanded the 6th Battalion\, Royal Scottish Fusiliers in 1915 on the western front. Sir Winston Churchill was later to remark\, many years later;” Although an Englishman\, it was in Scotland I found the best three things in my life-my wife\, my constituency and my regiment.” His section of the front in 1915 was at Ploegsteert and whilst ‘Winnie’ was in charge this front became one of the most aggressive. WSC personally made 36 forays across ‘no man’s land’. Our Speaker for the ‘Don Boyle Oration’ this year is also a proud Scottish soldier\, Martin Holme.¬† Martin’s regiment are successor to the regiment Lt Col. Churchill served in. (The Royal Scottish Fusiliers and the Highland Light Infantry amalgamated in 1959 and became the R H F.) \nThe subject of Martin’s talk is ‘The Queen God Bless Her’\, and he will share with us his recollections of Her Majesty\, her family and the Welsh Corgi’s whilst he was a Member of the Royal Guard at Balmoral. DESCRIPTION:Victorians are invited to become involved in an innovative pilot project РThe Avenues of Honour 1915-2015 Рhonouring the memory of more than 102\,000 Australians who died in the service of their country\nDavid Lawry and Dr Darren Peacock will be presenting at the Royal Historical Society of Victoria on Tuesday 16 April\, discussing how the project works and how local historical societies can become involved. \n“The Avenues of Honour 1915-2015 project is a national initiative to honour with a tree the memory of every individual who has made the supreme sacrifice on behalf of all Australians\,” explained David. \n“Our aim is to document\, preserve and reinstate the original Avenues of Honour and establish new ones by the Centenary of Gallipoli in 2015.” \nThe first stage of the project is capturing information about existing and lost Avenues of Honour and the people commemorated by them.
