DESCRIPTION:Captain Martin Holme\, late of the ‘Royal Highland Fusiliers‚Äô\, ‘Princess Margaret’s own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment.’\nLt Col Winston Churchill commanded the 6th Battalion\, Royal Scottish Fusiliers in 1915 on the western front. Sir Winston Churchill was later to remark\, many years later;” Although an Englishman\, it was in Scotland I found the best three things in my life-my wife\, my constituency and my regiment.” His section of the front in 1915 was at Ploegsteert and whilst ‘Winnie’ was in charge this front became one of the most aggressive. WSC personally made 36 forays across ‘no man’s land’. Our Speaker for the ‘Don Boyle Oration’ this year is also a proud Scottish soldier\, Martin Holme.¬† Martin’s regiment are successor to the regiment Lt Col. Churchill served in. (The Royal Scottish Fusiliers and the Highland Light Infantry amalgamated in 1959 and became the R H F.) \nThe subject of Martin’s talk is ‘The Queen God Bless Her’\, and he will share with us his recollections of Her Majesty\, her family and the Welsh Corgi’s whilst he was a Member of the Royal Guard at Balmoral. SUMMARY:Honouring The Memory Of Our War Heroes
DESCRIPTION:Victorians are invited to become involved in an innovative pilot project РThe Avenues of Honour 1915-2015 Рhonouring the memory of more than 102\,000 Australians who died in the service of their country\nDavid Lawry and Dr Darren Peacock will be presenting at the Royal Historical Society of Victoria on Tuesday 16 April\, discussing how the project works and how local historical societies can become involved. \n“The Avenues of Honour 1915-2015 project is a national initiative to honour with a tree the memory of every individual who has made the supreme sacrifice on behalf of all Australians\,” explained David. \n“Our aim is to document\, preserve and reinstate the original Avenues of Honour and establish new ones by the Centenary of Gallipoli in 2015.” \nThe first stage of the project is capturing information about existing and lost Avenues of Honour and the people commemorated by them. SUMMARY:Battleship at War
DESCRIPTION:In this American film\, Monte Markham covers the development of Battle ships and their effectiveness\, from the 15th century to the 1990’s. This is a different but balanced take on this fascinating subject. It complements the excellent ABC series ‘Battleships’ which we enjoyed a couple of years ago. This film covers initial clash between the ironclads in the American Civil war\, the Russo Japanese War of 1905\, the world tour of Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet\, the advent of HMS DREADNOUGHT\, the Battle of Jutland in 1916\, and documents the success of the U Boat and the German surface raiders.\nThe Washington Naval Agreement and the race to rearm from 1936 is analyzed\, and we view excellent footage of the new Japanese\, American and German Navies ships which were to feature so strongly on History’s page in WWII. Being an American film\, Pearl Harbour\, Battle of the Coral Sea\, Midway etc\, are well covered\, as is the advent of the IOWA Class. Their effectiveness in WWII and subsequent conflicts provide us with fascinating finale to the story of one of the most exciting weapons ever devised.

SUMMARY:Episodes of the Royal Navy-episode 5- 'Tragedy and Triumph'
DESCRIPTION:Part 5 of the series\, is entitled ‘Tragedy and Triumph’ and features the sinkings of the carrier\, HMS GLORIOUS and of the German Battleship SCHARNHORST.\nGLORIOUS detached herself from the fleet operating off Norway in June 1940 to sail independently in company with the destroyers ARDENT and ACASTA for Scapa Flow. \nThe 3 ships were caught and sunk by the SCHARNHORST and GNEISENAU and from a total complement of over 1200 only 38 officers and men survived from GLORIOUS and 1 rating from each destroyer. Some 3 and a half years later the SCHARNHORST herself was sunk off North Cape. \nThis film features some rare scenes of HMS GLORIOUS during her 1935/37 Mediterranean commission\, and her Captain\, who is to be seen on the flag deck\, was Bruce Fraser who later flew his flag in HMS DUKE OF YORK during the Battle of North Cape. Thus not only did he have the satisfaction of removing this dire threat to the Russian Convoys\, but also of avenging his old ship! We hear interviews taken on board HMS DUKE OF YORK with Admirals Fraser\, Burnett\, and some officers and men after the battle .If you listen carefully to this segment you can hear the sound of the sea gulls from Scarpa Flow\, above the hum of the battleship’s extractor fans on that Day of December 31st 1943. \nIn the course of this film we will see glimpses of His Majesty’s Ships\, ARK ROYAL\, DUKE OF YORK\, HOTSPUR\, IMOGEN\, NORFOLK\, SHEFFIELD\, JAMACIA\, BELFAST\, COURAGEOUS\, ARGUS\, VALIANT\, WARSPITE\, RESOLUTION\, HOOD\, REPULSE\, RENOWN AURORA\, GALATEA\, YORK ENTERPRISE\, VINDICTIVE\, destroyers and various ship’s crews. DESCRIPTION:Part 4 is entitled ‘Colour Camera at sea WW2’.\nThis one hour program features rare coloured footage \,all taken between 1939/1942. \nSome of the highlights include:: the 1st battle Squadron with the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean\, and also the 3rd flotilla experiencing very heavy conditions in northern waters; the Narvik operation including HMS COSSACK¬† intercepting the ALTMARK; being on board HMS KENT and the ill fated Submarine HMS GRAMPUS¬† in the far east. \nA massive troop convoy is filmed from HMS NELSON and includes¬† rare view of many ocean liners of note! You will see fighting convoys¬† through to Malta\, which include¬† ‘Operation Pedestal! Witness the sinking of HMS EAGLE!! \nIt is not often we get to see footage of WW2 in colour! Roland comments that to his knowledge at least 4 serving officers did operate cine cameras during the war and this footage is interwoven¬† from the colour collections of two of these men\, shot from 4 different war ships\, HM Ships NELSON\, KENT and the Destroyers IVANHOE and LAFOREY. Unfortunately both destroyers and also our camera man who had served in both\, did not survive the war! \nOur thanks to David McFall of the Maritime Model Museum of Monavale\, for providing the film for us.

SUMMARY:The Militarisation of Australian History
DESCRIPTION:Marilyn Lake grew up in Tasmania\, where she completed her undergraduate and Master’s degrees in History. Marilyn moved to Melbourne in 1976 and enrolled in a PhD degree in History at Monash University.\nMarilyn subsequently held academic positions at Monash University\, The University of Melbourne and La Trobe University\, where she also served as Associate Dean Research and was appointed Charles La Trobe Professor in History in 2010. \nMarilyn held Visiting Professorial Fellowships at Stockholm University\, ANU\, the University of Sydney\, the University of Western Australia and the University of Maryland. Between 2001 and 2002 she held the Chair in Australian Studies at Harvard University. \nIn the last ten years Marilyn has mainly been in research positions supported by two ARC Australian Professorial Fellowships. \nMarilyn Lake was elected Fellow of the Academy of Humanities of Australia in 1995; and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia in 1999. She is currently President of the Australian Historical Association. \nMarilyn has published widely on the impact of war on Australian society. The Limits of Hope: Soldier Settlement in Victoria 1915-38 won the Harbison-Higinbotham prize and was short-listed for the Age Book of the Year in 1987. Other books include her biography FAITH: Faith Bandler Gentle Activist which won the HREOC award for non-fiction in 2002; Creating a Nation written with Patricia Grimshaw\, Ann McGrath and Marian Quartly which also won the HREOC prize for non-fiction in 1994\, while Drawing the Global Colour Line: White Men’s Countries and the Question of Racial Equality won the Prime Minister’s prize for non-fiction in 2009. \nMarilyn is also the co-author of ‚ÄúWhat‚Äôs Wrong with ANZAC? The Militarisation of Australian History‚Äù published by NewSouth in 2010; whose blurb states:\n‚ÄúIn recent years Anzac ‚Äì an idea as much as an actual army corps ‚Äì has become the dominant force within Australian history\, overshadowing everything else. The commemoration of Anzac Day is bigger than ever\, while Remembrance Day\, VE Day\, VP Day and other military anniversaries grow in significance each year. Pilgrimages to Gallipoli\, the Somme and Kokoda are commonplace and popular military history dominates the bestseller lists. Anzac has seemingly become a sacred\, untouchable element of the nation. In this brave and controversial book\, some of Australia‚Äôs leading historians dare to criticise Anzac. DESCRIPTION:“Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world. People believe them; but photographs do lie\, even without manipulation.” – Eddie Adams\nIn 1968\, photojournalist Eddie Adams captured the most iconic image of the Vietnam War: a point-blank execution of a Vietcong prisoner on a Saigon street. \nThe photo epitomised the horror of war and was circulated worldwide\, galvanising global opposition to the war\, as well as condemnation of General Nguyen Ngoc Loan\, the man who pulled the trigger. \nYet the `truth’ of any photograph is not straightforward. While Adams was awarded many awards for the photograph\, the context of the shooting has never properly been examined. \nEddie Adams: Saigon ’68 explores the story surrounding the production and circulation of this image and raises pertinent questions regarding the power of photojournalism in affecting human rights agendas. \nThis screening will be followed by a panel discussion with some of Australia’s leading journalists and photojournalists. \nFull $12 Concession $10 ACMI Member $9

DESCRIPTION:In his despatch¬† to the Secretary of the Admiralty dated July 1st 1915 \, VADM John de Robeck R N said of the Anzac troops\, ‘The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps in this their 1st battle\, set a standard as high as that of any army in History\, and one of which their country men have every reason to be proud’.\nDenise and Mac Gregory fulfilled a long held ambition to attend an Anzac Day Service at Gallipoli on Anzac Day\, in 1998 .Mac will recount to us the trials and tribulations\,(smelly toilets etc\, very early start\, climbing the hills of Anzac in the dark in order to obtain a vantage point\, stumbling into gorse bushes and prickles\, and stumbling into old concealed shell holes etc.) \nDenise and Mac attended the ‘Dawn Service’\, Service at the Turkish Memorial at Cape Helles\, and¬† Lone Pine\, plus they visited many cemeteries. We will share their experiences on April 22nd. \nJenny and Rex Williams went to the Dardenelles October 10th-12th 2005.Very conscious of his British and Australian Heritage\, Rex was most anxious to gain an overall perspective of the campaign covering both the ‘Cape Helles’ area as well as ‘Anzac’. We will share photos of ‘V’ Beach where the collier River Clyde was beached\, and where 6 V C’s were won\, a beach where the sea was coloured red\, plus shots¬† of ‘W’ beach where 6 VC’s were also won. He took a photo of a field called ‘Eski Hiscarlik’ where on 1st-2nd May 1915\, thousands of Turks and allied soldiers were killed during a failed Turkish counter attack. As it is at Anzac Cove\, this is hallowed ground for both sides .Plus you will enjoy many photos taken at Anzac which some of you may be familiar. The third facet of our ‘Anzac’ meeting will be a ‘Show and Tell’ of ‘your’ Anzac ‘ memorabilia. Grand dad’s tin helmet\, his stories\, badges found at a first aid post\, bullets found near ‘Lone Pine’; all your artifacts are welcome to be shared!

DESCRIPTION:Bob Richards joined the Navy as a junior recruit in January 1973\, and he was selected as an Officer Candidate during his early days at HMAS LEEUWIN.On December 6th 2006 he was Promoted to Commodore and assumed duties as Director General Logistics Assurance in the Joint Logistics Group. Chief of Navy also appointed him Head of the Supply Community .January 2009 saw him assume his final appointment as Director General of Maritime Support in the Defence Materiel Organisation.\nBob will fill us in on his interesting and varied career in the 39 years  between 1973 and 2012 when he transferred to  the Reserve in February. SUMMARY:70 Years after the Battle\, The Wau-Salaumua Campaign of 1943.
DESCRIPTION:Military Historical Society of Australia РVictorian Branch Monthly Meeting.\nThe Wau-Salaumua Campaign followed on from the battle for Wau at the start of 1943. After defeating the Japanese attack on Wau\, the Australians made ready to advance. The Japanese retreated two-thirds of the way back across the mountains\, but were determined to hold a line there. The battles fought in 1943 by the Allied forces 70 years ago are worth remembering. Reg Yates has recently returned from walking the Balck Cat Track and visiting the surrounding area with relatives of veterans that fought and died in the campaign. Reg with the aid of both period and current images\, will articulate the history as it was then and as it is remembered now. \nGuest Speaker Bio: \nReg Yates is an experienced trek leader\, having completed over 44 Kokoda treks since 1984\, including one with ADF soldiers on adventurous training and seven with Sydney-based High Schools. He served for 36 years as a paramedic with Melbourne Ambulance Service and has 30 years Army Reserve service\, mostly as an Infantry Captain in training.\nReg has walked all WWII routes in PNG including the Bulldog-Wau Army Road\, the Wau-Salamaua Tracks\, the Saruwaged Crossing from Peter Ryan’s\, “Fear Drive My Feet”\, Shaggy Ridge\, Rabaul-Tol Plantation plus the Hindenburg Wall section of Karius & Champion’s 1928 Fly River to Sepik River Crossing. \nHe has rubber-rafted the Watut River with soldiers\, paddled a dugout canoe 360 km down the Sepik River\, walked up Mt Wilhelm and written a demi-official ADF handout on Adventurous Training in PNG.Reg brings a wealth of knowledge to Kokoda Historical and will continue to deliver a high level of service to all our future trekkers! \nWhen: Thursday \nWhere: Oakleigh-Carnegie RSL Drummond St Oakleigh
