Some 3 and a half years later the SCHARNHORST herself was sunk off North Cape. \nThis film features some rare scenes of HMS GLORIOUS during her 1935/37 Mediterranean commission\, and her Captain\, who is to be seen on the flag deck\, was Bruce Fraser who later flew his flag in HMS DUKE OF YORK during the Battle of North Cape. Thus not only did he have the satisfaction of removing this dire threat to the Russian Convoys\, but also of avenging his old ship! Marilyn moved to Melbourne in 1976 and enrolled in a PhD degree in History at Monash University.\nMarilyn subsequently held academic positions at Monash University\, The University of Melbourne and La Trobe University\, where she also served as Associate Dean Research and was appointed Charles La Trobe Professor in History in 2010. \nMarilyn held Visiting Professorial Fellowships at Stockholm University\, ANU\, the University of Sydney\, the University of Western Australia and the University of Maryland. Between 2001 and 2002 she held the Chair in Australian Studies at Harvard University. \nIn the last ten years Marilyn has mainly been in research positions supported by two ARC Australian Professorial Fellowships. \nMarilyn Lake was elected Fellow of the Academy of Humanities of Australia in 1995; and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia in 1999. She is currently President of the Australian Historical Association. \nMarilyn has published widely on the impact of war on Australian society. The Limits of Hope: Soldier Settlement in Victoria 1915-38 won the Harbison-Higinbotham prize and was short-listed for the Age Book of the Year in 1987. We will share their experiences on April 22nd. \nJenny and Rex Williams went to the Dardenelles October 10th-12th 2005.Very conscious of his British and Australian Heritage\, Rex was most anxious to gain an overall perspective of the campaign covering both the ‘Cape Helles’ area as well as ‘Anzac’. We will share photos of ‘V’ Beach where the collier River Clyde was beached\, and where 6 V C’s were won\, a beach where the sea was coloured red\, plus shots¬† of ‘W’ beach where 6 VC’s were also won. He took a photo of a field called ‘Eski Hiscarlik’ where on 1st-2nd May 1915\, thousands of Turks and allied soldiers were killed during a failed Turkish counter attack. As it is at Anzac Cove\, this is hallowed ground for both sides .Plus you will enjoy many photos taken at Anzac which some of you may be familiar. After defeating the Japanese attack on Wau\, the Australians made ready to advance. The Japanese retreated two-thirds of the way back across the mountains\, but were determined to hold a line there. The battles fought in 1943 by the Allied forces 70 years ago are worth remembering. Reg Yates has recently returned from walking the Balck Cat Track and visiting the surrounding area with relatives of veterans that fought and died in the campaign.
