SUMMARY:Debt of Honour Photographic Exhibition - Bruce Butler
DESCRIPTION:Reflects the debt of honour owed by Australia to the Timorese people. In  1942 two of Australia’s first Commando units who trained at Wilsons  Promontory fought a guerrilla war against the Japanese in former  Portuguese East Timor. The Commandos only survived through the support  of the Timorese people who provided food and shelter\, warned of  approaching danger and assisted with escapes after ambushes.\nAs a member of the Friends of East Timor group\, Bruce Butler has  created this exhibition to show the Australian people the debt owed to  both Australian soldiers and the East Timorese people whos supported  them during world War II \nStockyard gallery \nwww.stockyardgallery.org.au

SUMMARY:The Western Front in Belgium: An Aerial Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The Western Flanders region of the Western Front is indelibly linked with Australians at war and Anzac. Ghent based Belgian researchers\, Birger Stichelbaut and Jean Bourgeois will talk about the application of large numbers of historical aerial photographs in Great War conflict archaeology.  Their research is based on the interpretation and mapping of more than 20\,000 unique aerial photographs originating from collections all over the world including Australia.  The presentation will provide visual introduction to Great War aerial photography and conflict archaeology in Belgium.

SUMMARY:Survival at Sea
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Catherine McCullagh\nOn Friday 14 May 1943\, while the east coast of Australia lay in the darkness of the wartime blackout\, a brightly lit vessel cruised north\, a floating beacon against the blackened sea. The 2/3rd Australian Hospital Ship Centaur was 40 miles east of Brisbane\, heading for New Guinea to take on casualties at Port Moresby. She carried a total of 332 passengers—76 crew and 256 medical staff\, including 12 nurses. The Centaur was ablaze with floodlights which clearly showed the traditional red crosses of a hospital ship painted on her hull\, deck and funnel. There was no doubt as to the nature of the target when\, at 4.10 a.m. on the morning of 14 May\, a torpedo hit the Centaur just forward of amidships. She sank in less than four minutes taking with her all but 63 of the ship’s passengers and crew. It would be 36 gruelling hours before the survivors were plucked from amidst the floating wreckage by a passing American warship. Ellen Savage\, the only surviving nurse\, would later be awarded the George Medal for her role in rallying the passengers over the long hours of darkness. The sinking of the Centaur would likewise become a rallying point in the bloody battle against the Japanese aggressor being fought in the jungles and swamps to Australia’s north.

SUMMARY:Behind The Wire: Images and Stories of Vietnam Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Many of us know Vietnam Veterans as kind people in caravans\, the nice man at the bowling club or as ‘grandpa’. But for almost four decades it has been a tough journey home. Now\, many former service men finally feel comfortable enough about their service in this controversial war to share their stories through the medium of photography and conversation with professional photographer Susan Gordon-Brown. For many of the veterans\, the process of being photographed and of telling their story was an act of catharsis. Join us as Susan speaks about the journey made by these remarkable Australians and some of the scars\, both physical and mental\, which these men still carry.

SUMMARY:A Unique Regiment - Regional Lecture: Warrnambool
DESCRIPTION:Dr David Holloway\, author of Endure and Fight\, an History of the 4th Light Horse Regiment\, will speak about the regiment\, unique in the AIF as the only unit to fight on each of the three major fronts involving Australian troops.\nIn describing how this came about\, Dr Holloway follows the regiment from Melbourne to Gallipoli\, it being divided thereafter so that two squadrons went to the Western Front whilst the reinforced remainder served through much of the Palestine campaign\, notably at Beersheba and the fall of Damascus. \nThe story is replete with tales of individual soldiers\, many of whom came from Warrnambool and the surrounding district and who will be mentioned during the talk. \nA Unique Regiment\nThursday 18 April – 5.30pm arrival for 6pm start\nDr David Holloway\nRegional Lecture: Warrnambool\, location TBC

SUMMARY:Escape and Evasion in Enemy-Occupied Crete 1941-43
DESCRIPTION:Talk by historian Ian Frazer\, former Lecturer at Otago Univesity and co-author of ‘On the run РAnzac escape and evasion in enemy-occupied Crete’.In the Battle of Crete in May 1941\, the 2/7th Australian Infantry Battalion\, fought with much honour\, including a last-ditch stand at ‘42nd Street’ in the final days of the battle.\nFighting in the rear-guard\, they were denied evacuation at the last minute and forced to capitulate. Large numbers went on the run as evaders and escapers. Some managed to escape Crete by themselves; many more were rescued by the British secret services.\nThis story\, which spanned more than two years after May 1941 is not so well-known. It was another outstanding chapter in the history of the Battalion.\nThis talk is a tribute those soldiers and the brave Cretan families who gave them shelter and eventually helped them escape.

DESCRIPTION:Tim Whitford and John Gribben take their presentation on the road to visit the community of Shepparton.  During the Second World War thousands of Prisoners of War\, ‘enemy aliens’ and Australians of German\, Japanese and Italian descent found themselves imprisoned inside a huge POW/Internment Camp complex in farmland in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley. In the years that followed there were murders\, escapes\, riots and intrigue. There was also much humour\, compassion and demonstrations of the better parts of human nature. SUMMARY:Carers in Captivity: Australian POW Medical Officers in the Second World War
DESCRIPTION:Dr Rosalind Hearder will reflect on the work of the 106 Australian medical officers in Japanese captivity during the Second World War.Caring for their fellow 22\,000 prisoners\, one-third of whom died in captivity\, this small group of men fought incredible odds to save so many.\nDr Hearder will examine the unique challenges faced by these doctors\, where they did pioneering and ingenious medical work despite having little or no medical supplies\, faced constant conflict with brutal captors and were forced to make decisions that no other group of POWs faced. \nShe will also explore some of the post-war psychological and physical legacies of captivity\, both among the doctors themselves and the wider group of Australian survivors.

These were supplied to us by our good friend \,David Mc Fall of the Maritime Model Museum Mona Vale\, and it would be a great pity not¬† to share¬† this treat\, and so we are designating it as a ‘Bring a Friend’ Meeting!!\nNHS Meeting detail for February 2013. \nPresentation Date: \nMonday 25th February 2013 at the MNC South Yarra. \nPart three of the ‘Episodes of the Royal Navy Films’ is entitled: ‘CLOSE UP ACTION STATIONS’. \nIn 1976 HMS Ganges passed for ever into history\, and this episode opens with a brief look back at its parade ground\, playing fields etc. and a ceremonial climbing of the infamous mast\, followed by more parades\, divisions and training routines at COLLINGWOOD and EXCELLENT. The film features rare views of the mine sweepers going about their dangerous tasks; the perils of east coast and channel convoys\, actually seen under attack\, filmed from Fleet and Hunt class destroyers. The definition of peace is usually only done in the negative. \nPeace is defined as the absence of war. \nThis talk will attempt to develop a positive definition of peace; one that goes a little beyond the usual childhood drawings or symbolic gestures of peace as people holding hands or carrying garlands of flowers. \nIt begins with ancient symbols such as the early Greek and Christian olive branch or the Jewish greeting of shalom. \nFor all their strengths these symbols and greetings have simultaneously become the signs of empty peace. \nComing forward to the present\, the talk will take up the issue of humanitarian intervention\, arguing that to maintain positive peace we are sometimes required to intervene militarily. \nHowever\, given that most contemporary military interventions are done in the name of ‘peace’\, and most are failures\, humanitarian intervention has become a vexatious issue. \nThis too needs redefining.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Australia’s Security and Intelligence Organisations
DESCRIPTION:Dr John Blaxland\, presented by The Royal United Services Institute of Victoria\nDr John Blaxland writes about military history\, intelligence and  security and Asia-Pacific affairs. He holds a PhD in War Studies and is a  graduate of the Royal Thai Army Command and Staff College (dux of  foreign students) and the Royal Military College\, Duntroon. Dr Blaxland  has been to 37 countries. In addition to English\, he speaks Thai\, and  Spanish. \nHis publications include Strategic Cousins(2006)\, Revisiting Counterinsurgency (2006)\, Information era Manoeuvre (2002)\, Signals (1999) and Organising an Army (1989). His forthcoming book is entitled The Australian Army From Whitlam to Howard. \nPrior to moving to the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre Dr  Blaxland spent nearly 30 years in the Australian Army. In his last  military posting he served as Australia’s Defence Attaché to Thailand  and Burma from 2008-2010. In 2006-7 he was the Chief Staff Officer for  Joint Intelligence Operations (J2)\, at Headquarters Joint Operations  Command\, with responsibility for intelligence support to Australian  military operations world-wide. Prior to that he held a number of  operations and intelligence-related postings including to Australia’s  Defence Intelligence Organisation\, the Defence Signals Directorate and  as Intelligence Officer for the deployment to East Timor with INTERFET  in 1999. He also served with the US Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) in  Washington\, DC\, deploying on a humanitarian assistance operation with  the US Marine Corps. His earlier career included service as a Signals  Corps troop commander and as an instructor at the Royal Military  College\, Duntroon. \n \nDefence security policy requires you to advise the RUSI Office of  your attendance and the name of all your guests\, either by email to martin.holme@defence.gov.au or phone 9282 5918. SUMMARY:Art Show: Conflict and Compassion: Art From Peacekeeping and Active Operations.
DESCRIPTION:Conflict & Compassion brings together Artists and Soldiers alike;  exploring through the medium of art their experiences of operations. This  exhibition is held to coincide with the historic celebrations to commemorate the  cessation of a permanent Army presence at Fort Queenscliff. Thousands of people  from across the region are anticipated to attend the event. \n \nAs the title  suggests\, Conflict & Compassion explores the ADF involvement in active and  peacekeeping operations\, at home and abroad. Throughout Australian military  history there has been a time honoured tradition of soldiers depicting war  through art. This exhibition offers an exciting opportunity for  current and retired Defence Force  soldiers\, sailors and airmen to showcase their personal  experience of recent operations in an exhibition to be held at Fort Queenscliff  on 17 Nov 12. The art may take many forms (painting\, scultpure\,  photographic).
