SUMMARY:Mud and Blood - WWI play by Meg McNena directed by Alice Bishop - Special Performance
DESCRIPTION:Mud and Blood\, Meg McNena’s compelling 80-minute\, six-actor play\, is about distinguished Australian general\, Harold ‘Pompey’ Elliott\, who led the Essendon Rifles and took most of them to WWI. \n \nThe tenacity of Australian men and women is shown in battle and at home. Timing in 2018 with Anzac and Armistice centenaries adds impact. Set 1914-1921\, it shows how Pompey Elliott and a soldier’s mother deal with his vow to look after ‘his boys’ in war as if they were his own. This vow\, driving the play’s drama\, was made at a farewell to troops a century ago at Essendon Town Hall\, now the Clocktower Centre\, where Mud and Blood will be centre-stage on Fri 31 August. Women’s efforts and struggles are also pivotal . Please share in your networks and newsletter this opportunity to see a story about local heroes by a Moonee Ponds writer. \nA brilliant cast and skilled production team is powerfully directed by Alice Bishop\, who has been nominated for a Green Room Award for best director. Writer and producer\, Meg McNena\, has an Amnesty International Award and others for writing; this is her sixth play staged. Darren Mort\, a lawyer like Pompey\,plays his complex character masterfully. Humour and songs intone the era. \nMud and Blood‚Äôs Melbourne premiere is at the Clocktower Centre\, Moonee Ponds at 12 noon on Friday 31 August with a Q&A and talk by Ross McMullin\, awarded historian\, biographer and author of two books on Pompey Elliott (included in the matinee price) and opening night is 8pm 31 August. \nElliott trained youth in the Essendon Rifles militia; three units of his 7th Battalion came from the Northern suburbs and one from the Western suburbs; they trained at Broadmeadows and went with him to Gallipoli\, Lone Pine\, Fromelles and trenches of The Somme\, where Elliott turned the outcome of WWI in the Allies favour. Pompey inspires as husband\, father\, brother\, friend\, leader\, veteran and senator – the soldier before and after war; the stalwart wife keeps the family going; the cost for Pompey in making this heartfelt but impossible promise and returning to unveil honour boards and memorials. \nWe want to share this significant history of world-changing times for the newly declared nation of Australia and to increase awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder. \nHere is the vox pop from our successful preview in Charlton\, where Pompey was born. \nClick here for more information

SUMMARY:Debt of Honour Photographic Exhibition - Bruce Butler - Last Week
DESCRIPTION:Reflects the debt of honour owed by Australia to the Timorese people. In 1942 two of Australia’s first Commando units who trained at Wilsons Promontory fought a guerrilla war against the Japanese in former Portuguese East Timor. The Commandos only survived through the support of the Timorese people who provided food and shelter\, warned of approaching danger and assisted with escapes after ambushes.\nAs a member of the Friends of East Timor group\, Bruce Butler has created this exhibition to show the Australian people the debt owed to both Australian soldiers and the East Timorese people whos supported them during world War II \nStockyard gallery \nwww.stockyardgallery.org.au

SUMMARY:Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with Reportage\, festival of documentary photography.\nBetween the height of the French Indochina War in the fifties and the fall of Phnom Penh and Saigon in 1975\, 135 photographers from all sides of the conflict are recorded as missing or having been killed. This exhibition is a memorial to those men and women. Tim Page\, renowned photographer who produced many of the iconic images taken during the Vietnam War\, has gathered thousands of pictures taken by those who were killed or went missing. The Requiem exhibition is a selection of those photos. \nCaptured by both Cambodian and foreign photographers\, Requiem documents Cambodia in its last death throws\, before the country fell to the Khmer Rouge on April 17th 1975. Once in power\, the Khmer Rouge had no need for publicity\, no call for the media who they targeted indiscriminately. Most were ambushed summarily\, executed or marched into captivity. Requiem is a collection of their photos\, the photos they sacrificed their lives to take. \nOPENING HOURS: 12pm–6:30pm weekdays\, 1pm–7pm weekends \nRequiem \nFri 10 May РSun 19 May \nYarra Gallery\, Federation Square\, Ground Level Yarra Building \nOPENING: Friday 10 May\, 6pm–7pm\nEXHIBITION: Friday 10 May–Sunday 19 May\nviewing & floor talk with curator Tim Page: Sun 19 May\, 4pm
