SUMMARY:Mud and Blood - WWI play by Meg McNena directed by Alice Bishop - Special Performance
DESCRIPTION:Mud and Blood\, Meg McNena’s compelling 80-minute\, six-actor play\, is about distinguished Australian general\, Harold ‘Pompey’ Elliott\, who led the Essendon Rifles and took most of them to WWI. \n \nThe tenacity of Australian men and women is shown in battle and at home. Timing in 2018 with Anzac and Armistice centenaries adds impact. Set 1914-1921\, it shows how Pompey Elliott and a soldier’s mother deal with his vow to look after ‘his boys’ in war as if they were his own. This vow\, driving the play’s drama\, was made at a farewell to troops a century ago at Essendon Town Hall\, now the Clocktower Centre\, where Mud and Blood will be centre-stage on Fri 31 August. Women’s efforts and struggles are also pivotal . Please share in your networks and newsletter this opportunity to see a story about local heroes by a Moonee Ponds writer. \nA brilliant cast and skilled production team is powerfully directed by Alice Bishop\, who has been nominated for a Green Room Award for best director. Writer and producer\, Meg McNena\, has an Amnesty International Award and others for writing; this is her sixth play staged. Darren Mort\, a lawyer like Pompey\,plays his complex character masterfully. Humour and songs intone the era. \nMud and Blood‚Äôs Melbourne premiere is at the Clocktower Centre\, Moonee Ponds at 12 noon on Friday 31 August with a Q&A and talk by Ross McMullin\, awarded historian\, biographer and author of two books on Pompey Elliott (included in the matinee price) and opening night is 8pm 31 August. \nElliott trained youth in the Essendon Rifles militia; three units of his 7th Battalion came from the Northern suburbs and one from the Western suburbs; they trained at Broadmeadows and went with him to Gallipoli\, Lone Pine\, Fromelles and trenches of The Somme\, where Elliott turned the outcome of WWI in the Allies favour. Pompey inspires as husband\, father\, brother\, friend\, leader\, veteran and senator – the soldier before and after war; the stalwart wife keeps the family going; the cost for Pompey in making this heartfelt but impossible promise and returning to unveil honour boards and memorials. \nWe want to share this significant history of world-changing times for the newly declared nation of Australia and to increase awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder. \nHere is the vox pop from our successful preview in Charlton\, where Pompey was born. \nClick here for more information

SUMMARY:First drafts of History: Rediscovering Victoria’s war correspondents
DESCRIPTION:From the Boer War to Vietnam and beyond\, Australians have long relied on war correspondents to bring home reports from the front lines of conflict. Rediscover Victoria’s war correspondents including Alan Moorehead at a presentation by historians Dr Fay Anderson and Garrie Hutchinson\nAustralia has an impressive and enduring tradition of war journalism\, correspondents cinematographers\, artists and photographers who covered wars involving Australian troops and major conflicts\, which did not. Victoria has contributed to this roll call producing some of our most prominent journalists and photographers. My talk will examine two World War I correspondents\, Philip Schuler and Keith Murdoch and a defining group who were accredited during World War II most notably Damien Parer\, Chester Wilmot\, and the maverick Wilfred Burchett. There are also two less well-known names who deserve our attention\, Godfrey Blunden who alerted Australia to the Holocaust\, and Sam White\, a quixotic fellow traveller. It’s timely to reflect on war journalism\, its role as the first draft of history and to rediscover some of Victoria’s war correspondents and their compelling life stories. \nAssociate Professor Fay Anderson is a media historian in the School of Media\, Film and Journalism at Monash University. She has published widely on war\, journalism\, oral history\, the military\, biography\, genocide\, and memory. Witnesses to War: The History of Australian Conflict Reporting was co-authored by Fay and Richard Trembath and published in 2011. Fay’s and Sally Young’s co-authored book\, Shooting the Picture: A History of Australian Press Photography\, will be published in August 2016 by MUP. \nGarrie Hutchinson has written or edited more than 30 books including Eyewitness: Australians write from the Front-line\, Pilgrimage: A Traveller’s Guide to Australia’s Battlefields\, Pilgrimage: A Traveller’s Guide to New Zealanders in Two World Wars\, An Australian Odyssey: From Giza to Gallipoli and Not Going to Vietnam: Journeys through Two Wars. He is currently a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne and also completing a PhD on those who sailed to the First World War on the flagship of the first convoy\, the Orvieto. \nParis\, France. 1945-02-18.
