DESCRIPTION:Mud and Blood\, Meg McNena’s compelling 80-minute\, six-actor play\, is about distinguished Australian general\, Harold ‘Pompey’ Elliott\, who led the Essendon Rifles and took most of them to WWI. \n \nThe tenacity of Australian men and women is shown in battle and at home. Timing in 2018 with Anzac and Armistice centenaries adds impact. Set 1914-1921\, it shows how Pompey Elliott and a soldier’s mother deal with his vow to look after ‘his boys’ in war as if they were his own. This vow\, driving the play’s drama\, was made at a farewell to troops a century ago at Essendon Town Hall\, now the Clocktower Centre\, where Mud and Blood will be centre-stage on Fri 31 August. Women’s efforts and struggles are also pivotal . Humour and songs intone the era. \nMud and Blood‚Äôs Melbourne premiere is at the Clocktower Centre\, Moonee Ponds at 12 noon on Friday 31 August with a Q&A and talk by Ross McMullin\, awarded historian\, biographer and author of two books on Pompey Elliott (included in the matinee price) and opening night is 8pm 31 August. \nElliott trained youth in the Essendon Rifles militia; three units of his 7th Battalion came from the Northern suburbs and one from the Western suburbs; they trained at Broadmeadows and went with him to Gallipoli\, Lone Pine\, Fromelles and trenches of The Somme\, where Elliott turned the outcome of WWI in the Allies favour. DESCRIPTION:Australia’s experience of war\, especially in the First and Second World Wars\, helped shape our sense of ourselves as a nation and as a community with a distinctive ethos and way of life. To provide opportunities for future generations to understand\, investigate and value these experiences\, we must ensure that siginificant material relating to Australia’s war heritage is preserved\, not just in official national and state institutions\, but also in personal\, family and community collections.\nDepartment of Premier and Cabinet – Veterans Branch and the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation will deliver a series of free workshops for the public across Victoria. The workshops will bring Australia’s leading experts in preservation to you for a two-day line-up of free workshops and information sessions. Please join us to honour those who served in Vietnam with special guest speaker Major General David McLachlan AO. \nGeneral McLachlan graduated from the Officer Cadet School\, Portsea in 1959 and served in the Australian Army until 1994. He served in Malaysia\, South Vietnam\, the UK and Germany\,\nrising to the rank of Major General and being appointed General Officer Commanding Logistic Command. \nHe was elected State President of the Victorian branch of the RSL in June 2002\, retiring in February 2017. DESCRIPTION:The next War Veterans Luncheon will be held on Wednesday October 11 with our guest speaker The Honourable Dr Brendan Nelson\, AO.\nDr Brendan Nelson commenced as Director of the Australian War Memorial on 17 December 2012. Prior to this\, he was the Australian Ambassador to Belgium\, Luxembourg\, the European Union and NATO (2009‚Äì12). \nBorn in Coburg\, Victoria\, in 1958\, Dr Nelson studied at Flinders University\, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. He worked as a doctor in Hobart from 1985 to 1995. \nIn 1993 he became National President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and retired as president in 1995 following his preselection as the Liberal candidate for the Sydney seat of Bradfield. \nIn 1996 Dr Nelson was elected to the Federal Parliament of Australia. In 2001 he was appointed Minister for Education\, Science and Training; in 2006 he became Minister for Defence when troops were deployed to Iraq\, Afghanistan\, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. \nIn 2007 he was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Australia\, serving as Leader of the Opposition. In 2009 he retired from federal politics before taking up his ambassadorial appointment. \nDr Nelson was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in January 2016 for his services to the community\, the parliament of Australia\, diplomacy and cultural leadership. \nVisit the MCC website to book \n
