DESCRIPTION:Greece has a centuries-old tradition of armed resistance. The Greek word for partisan is Andartes and these fighters fiercely resisted German\, Italian and Bulgarian occupation from 1941 until 1944. Rival groups then turned on each other.\n‘Resistance‚Äô and ‚ÄòUnderground‚Äô are names used to describe the various secret organisations that arose in European states under enemy occupation during the Second World War. Many Australian servicemen and women gave aid to the Resistance\, other Australians owed their freedom and lives to it. Discover the stories of some of these individuals who\, through accident or design\, found themselves battling the enemy using unconventional means. \nVisitors are advised that this gallery contains graphic images of violence.

They have braved sometimes dire conditions and desperate circumstances\, often coming under direct threat of death and harm. \nThe exhibition explores themes of life\, death and compassion: what it means to preserve life when those around you are taking it; why enemies need treatment as much as your own do; how the long term health effects of service can become apparent only decades later; and how minds can be wounded and need treatment just as bodies do.

DESCRIPTION:Dr Mary De Garis of Victoria (1881–1963) was of the first ‘generation’ of Australian women to graduate from medicine in 1905. During the First World War\, Mary worked as a surgeon in a 200-bed tent hospital in northern Macedonia\, near the Balkan Front\, under the Serbian Army. \nJoin Dr Ruth Lee as she reclaims Mary’s experiences from the margins of First World War. DESCRIPTION:Following open heart surgery\, our internal wiring goes a little haywire – and the results\, surprisingly\, can be absolutely hilarious! \nOur heart objects to having been interfered with\, stopped and bypassed for a period even\, and quite mysteriously gives instructions to the mind to seek revenge! To stuff things around a little. “Do not\,” surgeons warn their patients\, “make any major decisions for quite some time after your operation because you’re NQR — Not Quite Right.” \nIn the retirement village Emerald Waters\, a group of heart bypass patients in rehab are learning to deal with this. Bernard Clancy’s stunningly poignant and heartfelt play “The Zipper” tells their stories\, from serious to downright hilarious and zany. One thing’s for sure\, their closeted little world will never be the same again… \nThe last time playwright Bernard Clancy teamed up with the inimitable director Wolf Heidecker for Clancy’s compellingly powerful play “Foxholes of the Mind” for performances at La Mama and on tour throughout Victoria in 2016 including the National Vietnam Veterans Museum\, their work was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its edge-of-the-seat entertainment. \n“The Zipper” is just as sharp.
