As a freelance journalist\, she was a feature writer for Australian newspapers and contributing WA editor to Belle Magazine. SUMMARY:Jan McLeod – “‘Dead\, mangled bodies\, blood\, guts and mud*’: The Medical War in Papua 1942”
DESCRIPTION:(*quoted from the diary of Private L.N. Kennedy of 2/4th Australian Field Ambulance) \n \nAmong the many military histories written about World War II\, the experiences of the men of the Australian Army’s field ambulance units have seldom been considered. This is certainly the case with the Papuan Campaign of 1942 – 1943: Kokoda – Milne Bay – The Beachhead Battles. At no time during this campaign were the Australian soldiers accompanied by fully equipped\, fully supported\, full-strength field ambulance units. The ability to render optimum treatment was compromised by many factors including logistics\, priorities\, leadership and the nature of the campaign itself. \nAlthough geographically close to mainland Australia\, these unarmed medical men and the casualties in their care were effectively isolated in Papua\, yet the challenges they faced were not insurmountable and did not occur in isolation. This presentation considers key themes\, issues and events which impacted on the field ambulance units. Controversial issues such as euthanasia\, self-inflicted wounds\, ‘malingering’\, casualty evacuation (or lack thereof)\, not to mention the wear-and-tear on the medical teams themselves will be discussed. The Japanese bombing of the 2/4th Field Ambulance Main Dressing Station at Soputa in November 1942 will also be covered. \nThe presentation draws on Dr McLeod’s new book “Shadows on the Track: Australia’s Medical War in Papua 1942-1943” covering Kokoda\, Milne Bay and the Beachhead Battles.\nCopies of the book will be available for sale. \nDate: 17 July 2019\nTime: Doors open 6:30 PM. Jan’s first book\, Shadows on the track: Australia’s medical war in Papua 1942 – 1943 was published earlier this year by Big Sky Publishing in conjunction with the Australian Army History Unit. She has also published journal articles and reviews – and presented her research at various conferences. Her Honours thesis contrasted popular representations of medical aspects of the Papuan Campaign with experiences recorded in the personal diary kept one of two great-uncles who served in the 2/4th Australian Field Ambulance during World War Two. Jan’s PhD thesis ‘Within Reach\, Beyond Care’ expanded on this research by critically examining broader aspects of the medical care of Australian soldiers during the Papuan Campaign\, with a focus on the field ambulance units.\nJan has a Diploma in Secondary Education (History and English)\, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours)\, and a PhD in History. Her lifelong interest in history\, health and education is reflected in her varied working life – as a student nurse\, adult education tutor\, secondary school teacher of History and English\, road safety education trainer and area co-ordinator\, and research assistant on various university projects.

SUMMARY:Official history of Australian operations in Iraq\, Afghanistan and East Timor
DESCRIPTION:Roger Lee works at the Australian War Memorial as the author of the Iraq volume of the Official History of Australian Operations in Iraq and the Middle East\, 2001-2014. The Iraq volume will cover the build-up to the 2003 war and the period of reconstruction and mentoring up to Australia’s withdrawal of its military elements in 2011. The project is intended to be completed by December 2022. \n \nBefore moving to the AWM\, Roger was the Army Historian and Head\, Army History Unit\, having occupied this position since 1996. Prior to this\, he was the DSPS (Directing Staff\, Public Service) at the Joint Services Staff College. Before joining Defence\, he worked for a number of Government Departments of which the most interesting was his three and a half years with the Department of the House of Representatives. He was working in the Reps Table Office during the crisis that is now known as ‘the Dismissal’ when the Governor- General brought the term of the Whitlam Government to a premature end. \nDr Lee has been interested in military history and the history of warfare for as long as he can remember\, probably encouraged by a father who served in Bomber Command during World War Two (winning the DFC for his actions in saving his Halifax over the Ruhr). In particular\, his interests centre on command and leadership and the evolving technologies that have so changed the face of battle. He has authored three books and numerous articles and presented several papers to international military history conferences. \nDr Lee holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of Queensland\, a Litt.B. from the Australian National University\, a Graduate Diploma in Strategic Studies from Joint Services Staff College\, a Master’s degree in Defence Studies and a PhD from the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy. \nDr Lee is happily married to Jenny and has three sons\, a step son and a step daughter. \n.Coffee and Tea from 12.00 pm.\, sandwiches after.
