SUMMARY:Heavy and Continuous Sacrifice’: New Zealand\, its Allies and the Second World War - Conference
DESCRIPTION:The war on which we are entering may be a long one\, demanding from us heavy and continuous sacrifice.” – Prime Minister Michael Savage\, 6 September 1939.\nSince 1995\, the New Zealand Military History Committee has convened five highly successful conferences on aspects of New Zealand’s military experience. In February 2020\, at Massey\nUniversity in Wellington\, it will return to the subject of the first of these conferences — the Second World War. This will be a timely reconsideration following the recent 80th anniversary of the beginning of that conflict in Europe with Germany’s invasion of Poland and New Zealand’s declaration of war on Germany. \nThe conference will address what was the greatest national effort in New Zealand’s history\, both at home and abroad\, affecting every person in the country. The focus of the conference will be\nwide-ranging. There will be a number of papers on military operations involving New Zealand or Allied forces\, in both the European/Mediterranean and Pacific theatres. The impact of the war at home\, both in the short-term and its legacy\, will also be addressed. \nAs in the previous conferences\, the committee has sought not only to encourage local historians and experts but also to bring to New Zealand a range of international historians\nto help put New Zealand’s experience in the wider context of the war. \nThe keynote speaker in 2020 will be Dr Jonathan Fennell from King’s College\, London\, an expert on the Commonwealth armies in the Second World War. \nOther overseas participants include Dr Claire Cookson-Hills (Queen’s University\, Kingston\, Canada)\, Dr Robert Engen (Canadian Defence College)\, Dr Mark Johnston (Scotch College\, Melbourne) and Dr Aaron Pegram (Australian War Memorial). About 30 other papers will examine a wide range of topics. \nThere will be chaired sessions on:-\n∞ pre-war policies and developments\n∞ 2nd NZEF’s discipline and experience\n∞ NZ’s foreign relations during the war\n∞ the campaigns in Greece and Crete\n∞ the North African campaign\n∞ the air and naval wars\n∞ the home front\n∞ the impact of war on veterans and families\n∞ loss and bereavement in war. \nThe conference will get underway at 2.30pm on Thursday afternoon\, 13 February. It will be followed by a formal evening event when noted Maori historian and Vietnam veteran Sir Wira Gardiner will give a keynote address. DESCRIPTION:Michael Veitch\, actor\, presenter and critically acclaimed author\, brings to life the incredible exploits and tragic sacrifices of the Australian heroes in the epic story of the Milne Bay campaign of 1942 – which saw Japanese land forces suffer their first defeat of the war – and has properly been called the RAAF’s forgotten finest hour. \nNOTE THE CHANGES TO DATE AND VENUE.\n\nSeptember 1942 marked the high-point of Axis conquest in World War II. In the Pacific\, Japan’s soldiers had seemed unstoppable. However\, the tide was about to turn. On Sunday\, 6 September 1942\, Japanese land forces suffered their first conclusive defeat at the hands of the Allies. At Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea\, a predominantly Australian force – including 75 Squadron (fresh from their action in 44 Days) – fought for two weeks to successfully defend a vital airstrip against a determined Japanese invasion. The victorious Australian army units were crucially supported by two locally-based squadrons of RAAF Kittyhawks. The Battle for Milne Bay and victory for the Allies was a significant turning point in the Pacific War\, but while it received worldwide publicity at the time\, it has since been largely forgotten… It deserves to be remembered. \nAbout the presenter \nMichael is well known as an author\, actor\, comedian and former ABC television and radio presenter. DESCRIPTION:Royal United Services Institute of Victoria Lunchtime Address.\nProfessor Greg Barton – TOPIC : Islamic State \nGreg Barton is Professor of Global Islamic Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute. \nGreg has been active for the past thirty years in inter-faith dialogue initiatives and has a deep commitment to building understanding of Islam and Muslim society. The central axis of his research interests is the way in which religious thought\, individual believers and religious communities respond to modernity and to the modern nation state. He also has a strong general interest in comparative international politics. He has undertaken extensive research on Indonesia politics and society\, especially of the role of Islam. Since 2004 he has made a comparative study of progressive Islamic thought in Turkey and Indonesia. \nHe also has a general interest in security studies and human security and a particular interest in countering violent extremism continues to research Islamic and Islamist movements in Southeast Asia and around the world. \nCoffee and Tea from 12.00 pm.\, sandwiches after.
