DESCRIPTION:The Military History Society of NSW presents: An online presentation by Phillip Bradley\n \n11:00AM AEST Saturday 2 October 2021 via Google Meet \n \nPhilip Bradley’s latest book tells the extraordinary story of the Australian campaign against the Japanese in New Guinea’s Finisterre mountains in 1943-44. \nOne of Australia’s leading battlefield historians\, he has written an enlightening re-examination of an important campaign following the experiences of the men from both sides. Using letters\, diaries and memoirs from the veterans of the Ramu Valley campaign\, including from the Japanese side\, Phillip takes the reader onto the battlefield. \nFrom the killing ground of Kaiapit to the treacherous heights of the Finisterre Range\, for four months in 1943-44 the Australian army fought to drive the Japanese from their mountain strongholds. The most formidable position was the fortress-like Shaggy Ridge\, its steep sides rising sharply to a knife-edge crest where battle was joined on a one-man front. Based on the accounts of over a hundred Australians\, Americans and Japanese who served on\, around and over the ridge\, The Battle for Shaggy Ridge tells the story of this extraordinary struggle for control of the Ramu Valley in New Guinea. \n  \nPHILLIP BRADLEY is the author of the ground-breaking Hell’s Battlefield and D-Day New Guinea\, and a leading Australian military historian. SUMMARY:The Elements of military Hygiene: Australian Pacific Forces\, 1945
DESCRIPTION:Military hygiene is an essential component of any war effort. In the severe tropical climate of the Second World War’s Pacific theatre\, disease disabled and killed more Australian troops than the enemy did.\nDr Cecil Evelyn Aufrere Cook (1897-1985) CBE\, MD\, DTMH\, DPH\, RACGP\, ACMA joined the Commonwealth’s Military Reserve as an honorary captain in 1932. He was Medical Officer for the Darwin Garrison until 1938\, when he was appointed Garrison Commander. In 1939 he joined the School of Military Hygiene as a lecturer and until 1941 was a Medical Officer in 4 Armoured Regiment. Cook enlisted for war service in 1941 and was demobilised in February 1946\, with the rank of Lt-Col AD-H (HQ). \nMilitary Hygiene applies at three levels – personal\, camp and region. Dr Cook addressed all three levels and made special studies of regional hygiene profiles before occupation (Morotai Island)\, before battle (OBOE 1 Tarakan and OBOE 2 Borneo) and after victory (Japan). This talk examines Cook’s studies of Japan to prepare the Commonwealth Occupation Force for their engagement in that country. \nWith assistance of some images the talk will describe the scope and content of his hygiene training regime and reports on hygiene risks in Japan\, as well as background information. A brief written paper for participants provides details of Cook’s military and civilian roles and awards in his career of over 50 years. A more detailed written paper will be available after the talk. \nBARRY LEITHHEAD is a retired management consultant specialising in corporate governance\, an author\, presenter and historian. He is the author of A Vision for Australia’s Health: Dr Cecil Cook At Work (Australian Scholarly Publishing\, 2019). SUMMARY:No regard for the truth: friendship and kindness. Tragedy and injustice. Rowville’s Italian prisoners of war.
DESCRIPTION:In March 1946\, the war was over. The Italian prisoners of war who had been captured several years earlier in northern Africa were interned in camps around Australia and were waiting to be returned home. One Saturday evening\, the commandant of the Rowville internment camp\, Captain Waterston\, shot and killed a prisoner\, Rodolfo Bartoli\, who he claimed was attempting to escape. What initially appeared to be a straightforward case of an Australian army officer carrying out his duty\, soon appeared to be something else. Allegations of assaults\, reckless firing of weapons\, drunkenness and stolen goods began to emerge. \nWe are delighted that Darren Arnott\, a Melbourne based IT Security consultant will share\, with RHSV members\, his experiences about discovering this story and the details of his research into ‘No Regard for the Truth’ where he delved into military and court archives\, historical police reports\, newspaper articles and personal accounts from former locals who still had memories of the Italians and the camp. He learnt of the brutal treatment of some of the internees and of a romance between the young shooting victim and the daughter of a local farmer which took surprising twist during his research. \nNo Regard for the Truth was shortlisted for the Victorian Community History Awards 2020 and in available in the RHSV bookshop.

Courtesy of Museums Victoria website.\nIn this seminar\, Patrick Ferry and other staff from the National Archives’ Victoria State Office will examine the range of resources available to help you discover more about the military service and sacrifice made by members of your family or local community. Key series in the National Archives’ collection will be highlighted\, including WW1 and WW2 service dossiers and Repatriation / Veterans’ Affairs case files\, together with records about civilians during wartime. The seminar will also point you to other valuable sources of information including Unit War Diaries (held by the Australian War Memorial) and Soldier Settlement records (held by PROV). Research methodologies will also be discussed. \nThis seminar will be of great interest to family historians\, local historians\, military history buffs and people with a general interest in learning more about Australia’s priceless military service records. \nPatrick Ferry is State Manager\, Victoria for the National Archives of Australia. Patrick is a professional archivist who is passionate about local history.
