SUMMARY:Defending with Pride: Midsummer Panel Talk
DESCRIPTION:Lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer people have been proudly defending Australia through their military service since the formation of the armed forces.  \n \nToday\, anyone identifying as LGBTQ+ can serve openly in the Australian Defence Force\, but it has not always been this way. It has been a long and often difficult journey for LGBTQ+ people to be recognised\, accepted and celebrated for their service. \nThe Shrine of Remembrance recently launched a special exhibition exploring the history of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer people in service —the first of its kind for an Australian war memorial—titled Defending with Pride: Stories of LGBTQ+ Service. \nIn this panel discussion\, LGBTQ+ service people discuss their experience in the Australian Defence Force and being part of this ground-breaking exhibition at the Shrine\, with Midsumma Chief Executive Karen Bryant. \nWhat is it like seeing their stories told at the Shrine? What is the role of institutions like the Shrine in creating meaningful connections that increase visibility and understanding? \nThe panel will be held in the Shrine’s Auditorium. DESCRIPTION:Since the Vietnam War\, Australian entertainers have performed for troops on the front line in war and peacekeeping operations.  \n \nTheir talent and celebrity have lifted spirits and brought a slice of home to service personnel abroad. \nForces Entertainment is the special military unit that fosters relationships between the Australian Defence Force and the entertainment industry. It recruits\, promotes\, and prepares entertainers for a taste of military life and ensures their safety in foreign war zones. \nIn addition to the well-documented performances in Vietnam\, Australian entertainers have been placed in East Timor\, Afghanistan\, Iraq\, the Solomon Islands\, Sinai and in HMAS vessels at sea\, often enduring gruelling tour schedules and the possibility of danger. They must adapt to military discipline and situations far removed from the civilian green room and stage. \nIn this special exhibition\, stories\, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond\, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue\, John Farnham and Lehmo. It also explores the mission\, operations and experiences of the people who have facilitated these successful tours. \nTheir contribution reminds us of the profound impact on and support for mental health and wellbeing that entertainment can provide our armed forces and all Australians.

We became the eyes and ears of the Pacific.’ Reg Evans\, Coastwatcher. \nHidden deep in the jungles and high in the mountains of the Southwest Pacific during World War II\, Australia’s secret army – the Coastwatchers – reported every move of the Japanese invaders to Allied intelligence. \nFollowing World War I\, the Coastwatcher organisation was formed from European planters\, missionaries and patrol officers living in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. All volunteers\, they were tasked with keeping an eye on Australia’s porous northern border and providing early warnings via radio. \nWhen World War II came to the Pacific\, however\, overnight the Coastwatchers found themselves no longer just observers but spies operating behind enemy lines. Besides evading the enemy’s desperate efforts to hunt them down\, the Coastwatchers battled exhaustion\, tropical diseases and malnutrition\, as well as the ever-present spectre of capture\, torture and death.
