DESCRIPTION:The Australian Navy Foundation Day Organising Committee\, Navy League of Australia\, Naval Officers Club\, Naval Association of Australia\, Naval Historical Society of Australia Victoria Chapter presents the 21st Annual “CRESWELL ORATION” \nWednesday 1 March 2023\, 1230 for 1300 \nGUEST SPEAKER: Captain Ainslie G Morthorpe CSM RAN Commanding Officer\, HMAS Cerberus. \nCaptain Morthorpe joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1986. He specialised as a Mine Warfare Officer for Landing Craft\, Mine Hunters\, a Replenishment Ship\, Destroyer Escorts\, Frigates and Destroyers. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1999 and was posted to the New Zealand Navy Frigate Canterbury. \nDuring his career\, he deployed to East Timor\, Middle East & Solomon Islands. He was promoted to Commander in 2006 and became the Head of Operations (J3) at HQ Northern Command\, being awarded a Conspicuous Service Medal for his service. SUMMARY:For Kin and Country - Exhibition - Last Week
DESCRIPTION:This special exhibition explores the extraordinary history of First Peoples’ service in the Australian Defence Force. \n \nIn the early 20th century\, defence service provided an escape for First Peoples from ongoing dispossession and discrimination and was for many their first experience of equal treatment. Most were paid the same rates as their European counterparts and there was little racism on the front line. Indeed\, First Peoples service personnel felt a strong sense of continuing ancient traditions of protecting Country\, and hoped their example of service would help improve conditions for their families and communities. \nVeterans\, however\, returned to the same discrimination they had previously known. \nIn this special exhibition\, photographic portraits sourced from veterans and their families\, the Australian War Memorial\, Koorie Heritage Trust\, and the Shrine’s own collection illustrate personal stories of First Peoples’ service from the Boer War to today\, whilst interviews\, filmed in conjunction with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image\, offer insight into the ongoing effects of war service on families and individuals. \nThese stories matter to us; we know they’ll matter to you.

DESCRIPTION:James Unkles\, CMDR (Rtd)\, will present his Paper “Lord Herbert Kitchener- Removal of Australian Memorials and Renaming Public Spaces Bearing his Name” at The Oakleigh Carnegie RSL \nHerbert Horatio Kitchener\, 1st Earl Kitchener\, is one of Britain’s most iconic military figures. \n \nPlaying a central role as Secretary of State for War in World War One\, his face adorned one of the most famous wartime propaganda posters ever created\, ‘Your Country Needs You’ Prior to WW1 Kitchener\, excelled as Britain’s military commander serving in Egypt as head of the Egyptian Army and Commander of Britain’s invasion of Sudan (1896-1899)\, winning notable victories at Atbara and Omdurman which awarded him fame as a dynamic military leader. \nHowever\, evidence shows another side of Kitchener\, war crimes (summary execution of wounded combatants) committed on the battle field and atrocities against innocent civilians. \nAny one is welcome to attend. \nBookings not required. \n  \nThank you for your consideration.\nJames Unkles\nCMDR (Rtd)\nPH: 0405 129 167\njamesunkles@hotmail.com \n
