DESCRIPTION:The loss of the Montevideo Maru is the worst maritime disaster in Australian history\, and until 2023\, the exact location of its final resting place remained a mystery. Its discovery in April off the coast of the Philippines made headlines around the world. Captain Turner played a pivotal role in the discovery alongside the team at Silentworld Foundation and Fugro\, with support from the Department of Defence. \nJoin us as Search Director and Submarine Specialist\, Captain Roger Turner CEng FIMarEST RN shares his behind-the-scenes insights into the remarkable discovery of the Montevideo Maru. \nDuring this event\, attendees will have the opportunity to gain unique insights into the intricacies of maritime archaeology\, modern technological advancements in underwater exploration\, and the meticulous research that led to the successful identification of the Montevideo Maru. \nThe talk will be followed by an audience Q&A and light refreshments. \nThis event is free for Shrine Friends* and volunteers using their discount codes. Booking essential. \n* One free ticket per membership \nAbout the speaker\nRoger Turner enjoyed 30 years serving in the Royal Navy as a nuclear submarine engineer before bringing his young family to Australia. While running his own engineering consultancy he then assisted with a number of marine archaeological projects including those concerned with Australia’s first submarines\, HMAS AE1 and HMS AE2. He was the search director for the discovery of the Montevideo Maru.

DESCRIPTION:Since the Vietnam War\, Australian entertainers have performed for troops on the front line in war and peacekeeping operations.  \n \nTheir talent and celebrity have lifted spirits and brought a slice of home to service personnel abroad. \nForces Entertainment is the special military unit that fosters relationships between the Australian Defence Force and the entertainment industry. It recruits\, promotes\, and prepares entertainers for a taste of military life and ensures their safety in foreign war zones. \nIn addition to the well-documented performances in Vietnam\, Australian entertainers have been placed in East Timor\, Afghanistan\, Iraq\, the Solomon Islands\, Sinai and in HMAS vessels at sea\, often enduring gruelling tour schedules and the possibility of danger. They must adapt to military discipline and situations far removed from the civilian green room and stage. \nIn this special exhibition\, stories\, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond\, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue\, John Farnham and Lehmo. It also explores the mission\, operations and experiences of the people who have facilitated these successful tours. \nTheir contribution reminds us of the profound impact on and support for mental health and wellbeing that entertainment can provide our armed forces and all Australians.

He is a retired Major General and a former Surgeon General\, Australian Defence Force-Reserves. He has served on eight deployments to Rwanda\, Iraq\, Solomon Islands\, Bougainville\, and East Timor. \nThe oration is named after Colonel Sir Ernest Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop AC CMG OBE who served as the first Australian Parton to St Andrew’s First Aid Australia.

DESCRIPTION:The DRA National Conference is a joint services all-ranks Conference that will be addressed by a panel of distinguished speakers including: \n\nGovernment and Opposition Defence speakers\nSenior Officers of the Australian Defence Force\nLeading commentators on Defence matters\n\n  \nConference Program: \nThe conference program provides opportunities to examine the Defence Strategic Review and its potential ramifications for the ADF Reserves. The DRA Conference Program will be available shortly on dra.org.au \n  \nConduct of the Conference: \nThe Conference will be conducted using a hybrid model involving either attendance in person or by a webinar for those attending virtually.  The Conference will be followed by a joint service\, all-ranks Formal Dinner from 7.00pm.  Spouses/partners welcome. DESCRIPTION:Young Australian teacher Bruce Dowding arrived in Paris in 1938\, planning only to improve his understanding of French language and culture. \n \nSecret Agent\, Unsung Hero draws on decades of research to reveal\, for the first time\, his coming of age as a leader in escape and evasion during Second World War. Dowding helped exfiltrate hundreds of Allied servicemen from occupied France and paid the ultimate price. He was beheaded by the Nazis just after his 29th birthday in 1943. \nJoin Bruce’s nephew\, prominent Australian lawyer and former Western Australian Premier Peter Dowding as he sheds light on this fascinating and tragic story. \nTea and coffee will be provided after the talk and copies of Secret Agent.
