DESCRIPTION:11 August 2023 to July 2024 \nFrom cherished toy soldiers and adventure comics to immersive cadet training and captivating computer games\, children have long engaged in war-like activities that ignite their imagination and spirit. \n \n  \nThrough these games\, stories\, and activities\, they navigate a world that can often seem senseless\, finding meaning and understanding within the chaos. \nThis first-of-its-kind exhibition at the Shrine of Remembrance delves into the experiences of children during war\, shedding light on their unique perspectives and the profound impact war has had on their upbringing. \nWhile war may have been an indirect experience for many Victorian children\, we also recognise those whose lives were directly affected. Some children faced separation from loved ones\, endured hardships and sacrifices\, or bore witness to the uncertainty and anxiety that war brings. Their stories are integral to understanding the lasting impact war can have on the formative years of childhood. \nJoin us for an immersive and thought-provoking journey as we explore the intertwined stories of war\, childhood\, and the enduring spirit of youth in the face of adversity. SUMMARY:Where the Flaming Hell are We? A Public Lecture by Author Craig Collie
DESCRIPTION:‘We used our knees and our rifle butts and our blades. For a while we stopped being ordinary blokes and became blood-lusted creatures.’\nMarch\, 1941: 40\,000 Australian and New Zealand troops are rushed to Greece in a desperate attempt to stop the Wehrmacht overrunning the country. Most of them overseas for the first time in their lives\, they seek excitement and adventure. What they get are experiences they could never have imagined. \nThe operation is doomed to fail\, but not before the Aussies and Kiwis succeed in holding up the German advance and evacuating thousands\, mainly to Crete\, where Hitler next sets his sights. As the Nazis assault the island\, they deploy a devastating new weapon of invasion – paratroopers − for the very first time\, meeting desperate resistance as the Allies fight for their lives. \nThis talk will delve into the experiences of the soldiers who fought in the mountains and villages of Greece\, and faced entrapment and death on Crete. DESCRIPTION:The Wednesday 6 December event has been cancelled & will be re-scheduled in the New Year. \nFormat: HardbackISBN: 978-1-922669-52-0Released: March 2023Price: $49.95\nTheir recruitment\, training and war service is detailed and was as diverse as it was dangerous. They served in the Atlantic and Arctic convoys\, Combined Operations which included the amphibious landings\, covert operations and mine-sweeping. Ten volunteers distinguished themselves in Rendering Mines Safe. Many towards the end of the war returned to Australia and served with the Royal Australian Navy in South East Asia. As a cohort\, they are probably the most highly decorated Australian servicemen. \nThe Yachties was launched by Vice Admiral Peter Jones AO DSC (Retd)\, President of the Australian Naval Institute at the 2023 Goldrick Seminar in the Adams Auditorium\, Australian Defence Force Academy on 19 October 2023. \nChief of Navy\, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond AO was Keynote speaker and ensured that he was in photos taken with the author and the Yachties’ families in attendance. \nIt was a very emotional and also poignant occasion for the author and the families concerned. Later that day the Yachties were remembered at the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. The first casualty. Ordinary Seaman Bill McGregor who was killed in an air-raid on 27 April 1941 in Portsmouth Barracks was the Yachtie who represented the volunteers on the day.
