DESCRIPTION:11 August 2023 to July 2024 \nFrom cherished toy soldiers and adventure comics to immersive cadet training and captivating computer games\, children have long engaged in war-like activities that ignite their imagination and spirit. \n \n  \nThrough these games\, stories\, and activities\, they navigate a world that can often seem senseless\, finding meaning and understanding within the chaos. \nThis first-of-its-kind exhibition at the Shrine of Remembrance delves into the experiences of children during war\, shedding light on their unique perspectives and the profound impact war has had on their upbringing. \nWhile war may have been an indirect experience for many Victorian children\, we also recognise those whose lives were directly affected. Some children faced separation from loved ones\, endured hardships and sacrifices\, or bore witness to the uncertainty and anxiety that war brings. Their stories are integral to understanding the lasting impact war can have on the formative years of childhood. \nJoin us for an immersive and thought-provoking journey as we explore the intertwined stories of war\, childhood\, and the enduring spirit of youth in the face of adversity. Discover the remarkable resilience\, patriotism\, and imagination of children throughout history\, and gain a deeper understanding of the profound impact war has had on Australian culture. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Victorian Government and the Victorian Veterans Council.

SUMMARY:Fighting Mac Mckenzie & other ANZAC Chaplains of WW1
DESCRIPTION:The legendary William McKenzie’s tireless work as a Salvation Army Chaplain among the Anzacs in World War I earned him the nickname ‘Fighting Mac’. \n \nOn the outbreak of war McKenzie applied for a chaplaincy immediately and joined the AIF\, attached to the 4th Battalion. He was one of the first chaplains ashore at Gallipoli. He lumped stretchers and carries water for months on end as well as tending the wounded and burying the dead. In France and Belgium he continued to live in the front line with the troops. McKenzie was at Pozieres\, Bullecourt\, Mouquet Farm\, Polygon Wood and Passchendaele. What makes McKenzie’s reputation incredible is that he embodied almost everything that the typical digger loved to hate. He railed against booze\, brothels\, betting and bad language\, and ran frequent evangelistic campaigns for the Anzacs. Despite these apparent disadvantages Fighting Mac was worshipped and revered by the soldiers — becoming the man who best represented the Anzac ideal. In this talk\, historian Dr Daniel Reynaud\, author of The Man the Anzacs Revered: The Legendary William “Fighting Mac” McKenzie\, Anzac Chaplain will tell Fighting Mac’s story and discuss the role and contributions of other Anzac chaplains of the First World War. \n  \nDr Daniel Reynaud is an authority on Australian Great War social history\, publishing books on its cinema (Celluloid Anzacs)\, wartime spirituality (Anzac Spirituality; The Man the Anzacs Revered; The Anzacs\, Religion and God) and Anzac food (The Anzac Table)\, as well as many book chapters and articles on similar themes. He initiated the partial reconstruction of Australia’s first Gallipoli movie (The Hero of the Dardanelles\, 1915/2015)\, and has authored and fronted an award-winning series of documentaries on the Anzacs and religion. He is Emeritus Professor of History at Avondale University. DESCRIPTION:The cancelled rescue mission that sacrificed Sandakan POWs to the Death Marches. \nWednesday 21 February 2024 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Daylight Time) \n \n \nThe chain of events that led to the death of over 2\,500 Prisoners of War – one of Australia’s worst wartime tragedies – the cancellation of the rescue mission Operation Kingfisher.\nFinally\, the true story of why the Sandakan POWs of World War II were not rescued despite a fully planned and resourced operation – including men\, aircraft and naval vessels – all equipped to carry out the rescue mission. \nThere have been several published theories on Operation Kingfisher which explore if the plan really existed\, why it was cancelled and who was to blame for its cancellation. For the first time\, Operation Kingfisher analyses the effects government policy and the relationships of Churchill\, Roosevelt and Curtin had on the mission and its final outcome. \nUsing recently released archival documents\, the author uncovers the mistakes made by Allied governments and special forces in Borneo that triggered the Death Marches Number 2 and Number 3. It reveals the mistaken intelligence which caused the cancellation of the rescue mission of the POWs at the Sandakan POW camp – a decision that ultimately resulted in their deaths. \nThe author discloses the actual chain of events that led to the tragic sacrifice of all but six survivors of the Sandakan POW camp. \n \n  \n  \nAbout the presenter\nGary Followill is a successful business owner of an international agricultural import/export company\, turned military historian and writer. \nHe has a lifelong interest in history and\, in 2010\, commenced a Master of Art degree in Military History at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. Operation Kingfisher follows years of research at archives in Australia\, Great Britain\, and the United States of America. \nGary uses previously unseen and recently released archival files to find the real story of the cancellation of the Sandakan POW rescue mission – Operation Kingfisher. \nHis findings are completely different from previous theories on the reason over 2\,500 POWs lost their lives on the Death Marches. DESCRIPTION:The Army – Post Force Structure Review. \n \nMajor General Jason Blain\, DSC\, AM\, CSC\nHead\, Land Systems \, Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group \nTopic: The Army – Post Force Structure Review. \nMajor General Jason Blain was born in Mossman\, north Queensland\, and completed his schooling in Ingham. After attaining a Bachelor of Arts\, he attended the Royal Military College Duntroon\, graduating into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1991. During his more than 30 years’ service\, he has served in an extensive range of command appointments. As an Infantry officer he has commanded at all levels within the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) and was the Commanding Officer of the 6th Battalion RAR from 2008 to 2009. \nHe was the Commander of the 7th Combat Brigade in Brisbane\, one of Army’s three combat brigades\, from 2020 to 2021. On promotion to Major General in 2022 he was appointed the Head of Armoured Vehicles.
