DESCRIPTION:A Public Lecture by Noel Phelan. \n \n\nThis year we commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day\, the Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944. Operation Overlord was the greatest amphibious assault in history\, a crucial turning point of World War II\, and a miracle of planning\, logistics\, coordination and supply. He then moved into IT with IBM as a systems engineer and spent 25 years in various technical and management positions. \nHe has been a volunteer guide at the Maritime Museum for over 15 years. Noel was the team leader of the speakers for many years. \nNoel is a Past President of the Northbridge Rotary club. He spent many years as sailing captain of his sailing club. He also spent several years with Marine Rescue and the Rural Fire Service. \nNoel is also a volunteer at the Naval Historical Society where he has developed three Navy harbour cruises. He has also organised a speaker’s program for the Navy Historical Society where the presentations are delivered by Zoom to the 500 members around Australia. \nHe fulfilled a boyhood dream to fly a WW II fighter by flying a SPITFIRE at The Imperial War Museum at Duxford in the UK recently. \n\n

SUMMARY:Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial Commemorative Service – Lemnos Square
DESCRIPTION:Annual Commemorative Event at Lemnos Square. \n \n  \nWe have had many services over the years since the official unveiling in 2015. Many dignitaries from here and abroad have visited our Memorial and paid their respects\, including the former Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff\, General Konstantinos Floros. He was present when then Councillor Bernadene Voss\, as the Mayor of the City of Port Phillip\, announced the formal naming of the Reserve on which our Memorial is located\, “Lemnos Square”. \nThis bronze Memorial\, of a nurse protecting a weary soldier\, was sculpted by renowned artist Peter Corlett OAM. It recognizes the important role of the Greek island of Lemnos in Australia’s ANZAC story and is dedicated to the Australian nurses and soldiers who served there during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915; to the 148 Australian soldiers who remain buried there; and to the local community who supported them. \nOur 2024 Commemorative Service at Lemnos Square will include an address\, a wreath-laying ceremony\, the national anthems of Greece and Australia and the reciting of the Ode. \nThis year’s address will delivered by Captain Ryan Curtis\, a descendent of Warrant Officer Archibald Monk of the 3rd Australian General Hospital who served on Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign. \nYou can also purchase a copy of ‘Lemnos Gallipoli Revealed’ or ‘Grecian Adventure’ – both authored by Jim Claven – which you will be able to collect at the conclusion of the commemorative service and then gift to a school or organisation to continue educating the wider community about the Hellenic connection to the Anzac story. \n  \nPlease email me at lee.tarlamis@hotmail.com to advise of your attendance by Monday 5 August 2024 \nYours sincerely \nLee Tarlamis OAM MP\nPresident \nLemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee

Sir Harry Chauvel Foundation Ambassador) to welcome attendees and introductions. \nDr David Holloway\, OAM\, who will provide a brief overview of the 4LHR\, his own friendships with the old boys and his historical work to document the Regiment and its descendant units. \nHon. Murray Thompson\, OAM The 4LHR ‘Endure and Fight’ the Regiment’s well-chosen motto. Murray will present an overview of the 4LHR 1914 – 1919. \nHon. Dr. Sharman Stone ‘The 4LHR on the Western Front’. From grand monuments to humble sanctuaries\, you’ll discover the different visions that once competed for a place in the heart of Victoria. Reflect on the questions that challenged Victorians of yesteryear: should a memorial honour the past or herald the future? Should it be grandiose or modest\, solemn or hopeful? Decide for yourself whether the Shrine of Remembrance was the best choice for the National War Memorial of Victoria. \nOffering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the past\, visitors can examine detailed plans\, conceptual drawings and correspondence\, and eavesdrop on conversations between designers and builders from the 1920s\, gaining insight into the creative process behind the Shrine’s inception. \nAs we celebrate the Shrine’s 90th anniversary\, this exhibition serves as a poignant reflection on the roads not taken. The second group consists of Belgian men engaged in ongoing bomb disposal efforts on those same former battlefields today. \nDrawing inspiration from Australian cultural and artistic figures like photographer Frank Hurley and artist Will Longstaff\, artist Ian Alderman embarks on a philosophical journey exploring the enduring repercussions of human conflict—legacies that persist long after the cessation of gunfire. \nImages are accompanied by poignant quotes sourced from Australia’s Archives\, laying bare the plight of Australia’s war widows\, grieving mothers and traumatised returning soldiers. \n30 March – 29 September 2024

SUMMARY:Vietnam Veterans' Day Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:A wreath laying to honour all those who served in the Vietnam War.\nThis service commemorates all those who served in the Vietnam War on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. \nOn this day in 1966\, in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan\, Australian soldiers fought one of their fiercest battles of the Vietnam War. The battle saw D Company\, 6th Battalion\, Royal Australian Regiment\, face an enemy force of over 2\,000. Heavily outnumbered\, D Company held fast for four hours\, supported by accurate artillery fire from Nui Dat\, before reinforcements arrived. The battle saw 18 killed\, and was the largest loss of life on a single day for the Australians. \nIn 1969\, D Company returned to Long Tan to erect a memorial cross and commemorate the battle. Over time\, this day became synonymous with all those who served and died in the Vietnam War. In 1987\, then Prime Minister Bob Hawke made this official\, announcing that Long Tan Day would now be known as Vietnam Veterans’ Day. \nWe continue to honour the service and sacrifice of all Vietnam veterans on this day. Approximately 60\,000 Australians served in the Vietnam War. Of these\, 3\,000 were wounded\, and 521 were killed. \nThis service is organised by the Victorian branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association.
