Our latest exhibition commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Shrine of Remembrance\, offering a nostalgic experience that\, for the first time\, delves into the forgotten designs for Victoria’s War Memorial. \n \nExplore the entries of the 1921 War Memorial design competition\, each a testament to the social and political tapestry of that time. From grand monuments to humble sanctuaries\, you’ll discover the different visions that once competed for a place in the heart of Victoria. Reflect on the questions that challenged Victorians of yesteryear: should a memorial honour the past or herald the future? Should it be grandiose or modest\, solemn or hopeful? SUMMARY:Immortals - Clayton Tremlett
DESCRIPTION:Discover a compelling exploration of history and memory through the eyes of Central Victorian artist Clayton Tremlett in our latest exhibition. After more than six years of dedicated research\, Tremlett presents a comparative portrait study of sixty-six First World War Digger memorials\, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the faces that have stood as silent sentinels for a century. \nTremlett’s meticulous process involved visiting\, documenting\, and researching each monument\, often capturing their likeness at sunrise to harness the purest light. His work results in powerful screen prints that mirror the iconic First World War studio portraits\, allowing you to see these memorials in a new light—both literally and figuratively. \nThe exhibition also sheds new light on August Rietman\, the most prolific Victorian sculptor of Digger statues. A pacifist of Swiss-German heritage\, Rietman’s figures are celebrated as the quintessential Aussie Digger. Tremlett’s research reveals that Rietman’s contributions to these monuments are far more significant than previously thought\, with at least fifteen statues attributed to his craftsmanship. \nImmerse yourself in this fusion of art\, history\, and research\, and witness the faces of our past brought vividly to life. \n  \n5 October 2024 – 13 April 2025

DESCRIPTION:Life So Full of Promise\, Ross McMullin’s second multi-biography about Australia’s lost generation of World War I\, features a collection of interwoven family stories about forgotten Australians who had radiant potential.\n \nThe rich cast of characters includes a popular doctor\, an eminent newspaper editor\, and a potential prime minister. \n  \nA feature of the book is its coverage of cricket and cricketers of the era. It reveals the untold story of a keen all-rounder who was chosen in an Australian team to tour England\, but surprisingly did not go. There is also a superb biography of a brilliant yet practically unknown cricketer whose stunning feat has never been matched. Other prominent characters include the most versatile top-level sportsman Australia has ever known\, and a Test prospect whose violent postwar death shocked the nation. \nLife So Full of Promise recently won The Age Book of the Year Award after being shortlisted for the Nib Literary Award. Its predecessor Farewell Dear People won multiple awards including the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History. \n  \nAbout the presenter \nRoss McMullin is an award-winning historian\, biographer\, and storyteller. Life So Full of Promise is his sequel to Farewell\, Dear People: biographies of Australia’s lost generation\, which won national awards\, including the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History. His biographies include Pompey Elliott\, which also won multiple awards\, and Will Dyson: Australia’s radical genius\, and he assembled Elliott’s extraordinary letters in Pompey Elliott at War: in his own words.
