DESCRIPTION:Uncover a rare glimpse of one of the forgotten battlefields of the Second World War in this captivating talk with author and historian Dr Adrian Threlfall. \nIn October 2024\, Threlfall embarked on an extraordinary journey to Papua New Guinea\, retracing the steps of his great-uncle and the 7th Australian Division after their campaign at Kokoda. SUMMARY:Immortals - Clayton Tremlett
DESCRIPTION:Discover a compelling exploration of history and memory through the eyes of Central Victorian artist Clayton Tremlett in our latest exhibition. After more than six years of dedicated research\, Tremlett presents a comparative portrait study of sixty-six First World War Digger memorials\, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the faces that have stood as silent sentinels for a century. \nTremlett’s meticulous process involved visiting\, documenting\, and researching each monument\, often capturing their likeness at sunrise to harness the purest light. His work results in powerful screen prints that mirror the iconic First World War studio portraits\, allowing you to see these memorials in a new light—both literally and figuratively. \nThe exhibition also sheds new light on August Rietman\, the most prolific Victorian sculptor of Digger statues. A pacifist of Swiss-German heritage\, Rietman’s figures are celebrated as the quintessential Aussie Digger. Tremlett’s research reveals that Rietman’s contributions to these monuments are far more significant than previously thought\, with at least fifteen statues attributed to his craftsmanship. \nImmerse yourself in this fusion of art\, history\, and research\, and witness the faces of our past brought vividly to life. \n  \n5 October 2024 – 13 April 2025

Our latest exhibition commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Shrine of Remembrance\, offering a nostalgic experience that\, for the first time\, delves into the forgotten designs for Victoria’s War Memorial. \n \nExplore the entries of the 1921 War Memorial design competition\, each a testament to the social and political tapestry of that time. From grand monuments to humble sanctuaries\, you’ll discover the different visions that once competed for a place in the heart of Victoria. Reflect on the questions that challenged Victorians of yesteryear: should a memorial honour the past or herald the future? Should it be grandiose or modest\, solemn or hopeful? Decide for yourself whether the Shrine of Remembrance was the best choice for the National War Memorial of Victoria. \nOffering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the past\, visitors can examine detailed plans\, conceptual drawings and correspondence\, and eavesdrop on conversations between designers and builders from the 1920s\, gaining insight into the creative process behind the Shrine’s inception. \nAs we celebrate the Shrine’s 90th anniversary\, this exhibition serves as a poignant reflection on the roads not taken. SUMMARY:Dive! Australian submariners at war. Presented by Mike Carlton
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 19 February 2025 7:00PM-8:00PM \n \n \nSubmariners are a special breed. Not for them a life on the ocean wave\, the fresh air and sunshine of other naval sailors. With stealth and daring they go deep and dark\, alone and unseen\, in often dangerous waters. They sometimes call themselves the Silent Service\, with good reason. \nAustralian submariners have done extraordinary deeds in the First and Second World Wars and\, more recently\, the Cold War. In April 1915 the Australian submarine AE2 penetrated the Dardanelles Strait to ‘run amuck’\, a historic feat that was a turning point in the Gallipoli campaign. Eventually captured\, her crew spent three harrowing years as prisoners-of-war in Turkey. \nIn the Second World War Australian naval volunteers made their name serving in midget submarines\, attacking Hitler’s mightiest battleship\, the Tirpitz\, in the icy waters of a Norwegian fjord. Later\, they fought the Japanese in the South China Sea. \nAnd in the last half of the twentieth century\, RAN submarines played a vital role tracking the Soviet navy in the Pacific Ocean. One wrong move could have led to outright war. The risks they ran\, the perils they met and the intelligence they gathered are still classified Top Secret. \nSubmarines and the sailors who serve in them have been and remain the tip of the spear of Australia’s defences. For the first time\, this is their unique story. \n \nAbout the presenter \nMike Carlton \nIn a working life of more than fifty years\, Mike Carlton was one of Australia’s best-known media figures in radio\, television and newspapers. \nBeginning as a cadet journalist at the ABC\, he became a war correspondent in Vietnam and for three years was the ABC’s Bureau Chief in Jakarta. He also reported for the ABC from London\, New York and major Asian capitals. In television\, he worked on the ABC’s groundbreaking This Day Tonight current affairs program in the 1970s and for Nine Network News and A Current Affair. \nIn 1980 Mike turned to talk radio\, first at Sydney’s 2UE and then 2GB\, and later at London’s LBC Newstalk 97.3FM\, where he won a coveted Sony Radio Academy award in 1993 for Britain’s best talk breakfast show. His radio satire on current affairs\, Friday News Review\, was ‘must listening’ in Australia and the UK. \nFor many years he wrote a popular weekly column for the Sydney Morning Herald. \nMike has had a life-long passion for naval history and is the author of Cruiser\, First Victory\, Flagship and The Scrap Iron Flotilla. \nClick here to read a review of this book.

DESCRIPTION:Submarine Cables – a hidden weakness? With Samuel Bashfield. \n\nSamuel Bashfield is an Australian expert on Indo-Pacific security and defence policy. Sam speaks and publishes on national security and defence issues in leading international disciplinary journals and influential media outlets. In his current role as Research Fellow in Defence at the University of Melbourne’s Australia India Institute\, he studies and interprets geopolitical and defence trends across the Indo-Pacific\, with a particular focus on India\, the Indian Ocean Region\, maritime security and seabed issues. He is lead researcher on two Australian Government-funded research projects examining submarine cable security issues.
