SUMMARY:The Forgotten Mission: SOE Force 133 in Yugoslavia
DESCRIPTION:Nick Ilić shares the story of SOE Force 133 in the Second World War and examines its role in changing the political landscape of Yugoslavia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe Special Operations Executive (SOE) was created\, in the words of Winston Churchill\, to ‘set Europe ablaze’. Force 133 was the designation given to its operations in the Balkans and the islands of the Aegean Sea. \nForce 133 played an important role in the Belgrade Coup in March 1941\, prompting the invasion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia by Axis forces the following month. This delayed the start of Operation Barbarossa for six critical weeks. Had it not been for the invasion\, Moscow may have fallen before the end of 1941. \nActive resistance by the Royalists and later the communist-led Partisans soon turned into a civil war\, with British officers at one stage finding themselves supporting both sides. \nThis talk will examine the little-known role played by the SOE mission sent to aid the Royalist resistance in Yugoslavia and the factors leading to its evacuation in June 1944. It will also describe the role played by Brigadier Fitzroy Maclean’s mission to the Yugoslav Partisans. Maclean’s reports were often at odds with those being sent by SOE officers and ultimately led to Britain providing full support to the Partisans\, who took power in 1945. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\nNick Ilić served as an infantry and later general staff officer in the British Army for 34 years. During this career\, he carried out numerous operational and non-operational deployments to the Balkans\, starting during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s and ultimately as the UK Defence Attaché to the Republic of Serbia and Head of the Western Balkans Regional Military Network. \nNick regularly gives talks on the history of the region\, and leads battlefield tours to Serbia and Bosnia covering 20th-century conflicts. SUMMARY:VIETNAM 30/50 - Thirty Years of War/Fifty Years of Reflection - 1945-2025
DESCRIPTION:The 30 year war in Vietnam\, from 1945-1975\, was brutal and devastating. \n \n \nIt killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of both soldiers and civilians on both sides and destroyed communities across the country. Australia\, as an ally of the US and equally adverse to the spread of communism in South-East Asia\, made its contribution to support the Republic of Vietnam\, opposed by the southern Viet Cong and northern Vietnam People’s Army.  Fifty Years later\, historians and veterans of the conflict reflect on what happened\, why and deal with the consequences of that war. \nThis conference\, Vietnam 30/50\, is MHHV’s 6th biennial two day conference. It brings together veterans\, historians and authors to discuss and present new\, perhaps controversial\, research and findings on the strategies and operations of the Vietnam War\, from the French Indo-China war to 1956 to the withdrawal of the US\, Australia and other allies by 1975. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Moran for an engaging talk exploring the earliest chapters of Caulfield Grammar School’s history and the legacy of its first soldiers. \n \n‘Suddenly\, the Boer opened fire on us from two hills on the left of the road and we knew we had ridden into a trap. We quickly dismounted but were lying out in the open and I was on my back when a bullet hit the ground at the back of my head and threw dirt over my face. That was the closest shave I had.’ \nUndergoing attack by accurate enemy rifle fire was a common experience of the twenty-eight Caulfield and Malvern Grammarians* who served in Australian\, British\, or South African units during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 – 1902. Fighting as mounted infantry\, they often undertook their 12-month tour of duty on long tedious horse patrols\, sometimes riding at night to attack well defended enemy positions\, manned by crack enemy snipers. \nWith Australia under no threat from Boer forces\, why were Australians involved in this war at all? \nWhat conditions existed in Australian society and their schools that persuaded these Grammarians to enlist? \n‘First to Serve and Sacrifice’ examines the ethos and practice of schools in fostering these ‘Soldiers of the Queen’ and reminds us that these young Australians were willingly prepared to do their duty for God\, Queen\, and Country.
