Three big new events confirmed for Military History and Heritage Week

Military History and Heritage Victoria Inc. president Colonel Marcus Fielding, has announced that three big new events have been confirmed for Military History and Heritage Week (21-28 April 2012).

ACMI – films from 1942.  The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) will be offering showings of WWII-era film every day of Military History and Heritage Week, at the Mediatheque Theatre in Federation Square.  There are 12 clips in all, totalling 80 minutes of interesting events and activities during the 1942 period including the 6th Division march through Sydney and Melbourne; US Marines march though Melbourne; a WAAAF Bivouac; building a backyard bomb shelter in Melbourne, Army Medical Corps at Wangaratta; arrival of Land Lease goods at Victoria Docks from the USA; a demonstration of armoured vehicles at Fisherman’s Bend with Blamey, Fadden, Menzies and Gen. Bennett etc.

Admission is free.

MCG – War and Sport.  MCG Sport and War tours will visit both the National Sports Museum and the MCG itself, showcasing wartime directional signage, uniforms, medals, flags, honour rolls, plaques and photographs. Along with these treasures you can hear many stories and amazing facts about the role that the MCG played throughout the war years.

The MCG, Sport and War Tours during Military History and Heritage Week departs from Gate 3 at the MCG on April 23, 24, 26 and 27 – at 11.00am and 2.00pm each day and takes about 75 minutes.  Cost is $20 (adults) or $16 (concession) No bookings are required.

MHHV individual members or those who belong to MHHV member organisations are entitled to the concession entry of $16.  To take advantage of this member benefit, please show your member card at entry (e.g., member card for MHSA or Bendigo RSL etc.) or ID against your individual member name provided to the MCG Tour entry.

Corps of GuidesVictoria Barracks Tours. MHHV has arranged for exclusive private guided tours of Victoria Barracks Melbourne conducted by the expert Corps of Guides, for members and friends (only) of Military History and Heritage Victoria on 23rd and 26th April.  The tour will include a number of significant historical places and items within the Barracks including the famous War Cabinet Room.  There are two tours available: 1.30  PM on Monday 23 April 2012 or 10.00 AM on Thursday 26 April 2012.  Please RSVP to Zoe at 9650 9650 or mhhv@igsa.com.au no later than 13 April 2012 to secure a position.  There is no fee but a donation to the Corps of Guides would be appreciated.  Please meet with your Guide at the front gate entrance to Victoria Barracks and remember, you will need to bring a photo ID to gain entry into the Barracks.
