2025 ANZAC Day Lunch – So Much Blood, So Much Bravery – Was it worth it?

We rightly spend much personal and national emotion on remembering the Great War and indeed all wars.

We focus on the carnage, the loss of sons and brothers and on the exploits of our troops.

But what did it all mean?

Did we achieve what we anticipated when we got into the war?

At the end of World War 1 the world changed dramatically, empires were obliterated, new nations were born and new national boundaries were drawn; the demographic balance of the nations involved was drastically altered by the war’s casualties; the economies of nations were impoverished.

The arrangements for peace negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference were driven by a hard desire for revenge on the one hand but also a strong desire to ensure this war could not be repeated. The treaty signed at Versailles sowed some of the seeds which led inexorably, though not inevitably, to World War 2.

This talk will discuss some of the outcomes and consequences of the Great War and the effects it had on following decades, even up to this day.
