The Case behind the Judge Willis Case Books: Crime in Port Philip 1841-1843

An Event of Melbourne Rare Book Week, 17-27 July When: Tuesday 22 July Where: RHSV, 239 A’Beckett St Time: 1.00– 2.00pm.Speakers: His Honour Paul Mullaly and Janine Rizetti The RHSV is the custodian of 26 casebooks by John Walpole Willis, first resident Judge of the Port Phillip district 1841-1843.
Often in conflict with powerful interests, Willis was a controversial figure.

The casebooks comprise detailed notes of civil, criminal and equity cases. In this talk experts Paul Mullaly and Janine Rizetti will showcase the history behind these rare books and foreshadow the RHSV’s exciting plans for making them accessible online.
