The 2018 George Merz Lecture

The subject of this year’s lecture will be the C130 Hercules in RAAF Service. It will be presented by two guest speakers.
TICKET ONLY EVENT, limited by the RAAF Museum to 200 guests in total. Ticket price includes light refreshments.

Guest Speakers:

WGCDR Robyn Clay-Williams (retd), BEng, PhD

The first speaker to have accepted our invitation is; Dr Robyn Clay-Williams who was a RAAF test pilot, flight instructor and electronics engineer. Robyn was involved with the iconic C-130 at two points in her 24 year RAAF career: firstly in the early 1980s with the C-130E/H as an engineering officer at 486SQN, and secondly from 1995-2000 as the C-130J-30 acquisition test pilot based a Lockheed Martin in Marietta, USA. Robyn has over 3000 flying hours in more than 20 types of aircraft from large transport, to fast jet, helicopters, and light aerobatics, and in the late 1980s was on the first RAAF pilot’s course to accept women.

Nowadays, Robyn is a Senior Research Fellow with the Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University in Sydney.

 

AIRCDRE John (Sam) Samulski CSC (retd)

The second speaker to have accepted our invitation is: AIRCDRE John Samulski who joined the RAAF in 1981 as a Navigator and has over 7000 flying hours. He has commanded at Squadron and Wing level, being a Squadron Commander during the initial phases of both the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. He has also seen operations in the first Gulf war, Somalia and Cambodia.

In early 2005, he was appointed as the Australian Deputy Force Commander for Operation Sumatra Assist following Indian Ocean Tsunami. At the same time, he was appointed as the inaugural Director of the RAAF Air Mobility Control Centre, responsible for the planning and execution of all ADF air mobility operations.

Air Commodore Samulski has served as the Chief of Staff to the Vice Chief of the Defence Force, and as Deputy Director of Coalition Coordination at Headquarters U.S. Central Command. Upon return from the U.S. in January 2011, he was appointed as the Deputy Air Commander Australia.
