Vietnam and Back – Lunch with Jim Archbold

January 1, 1970 @ 10:00 am

James Stuart Archbold 3790920 was conscripted into the Army from the 1st Feb 1967. After basic training at Puckapunyal he was assigned to the Military Police and performed Corps duties at Abbotsford, completed an NCO’S course at South Head. In late February 1968 was posted to Vietnam as a Military Policeman. Jim was flown to Vietnam in a Qantas 707, which ironically was captained by his father Stuart Archbold.
“My duties there were curfew patrols and convoy escorts. By late March 1968 I was transferred to the Task Force HQ at Nui Dat from there I performed road patrols, road check points in the province, and assisted in the running of the POW Camp. During this time I spent 2 weeks at Fire Support Base Coral collecting NVA Prisoners from the infantry. Just prior to being at Coral, on the 26th April 1968 I was in a small convoy on route 22 near Dong Tam, which was ambushed by the Viet Cong. Resulting from this I was later awarded The Military Medal for Bravery under Fire. By late October 1968 I was transferred back to 1 ALSG Vung Tau and put on curfew duties. In January 1969 I returned to Australia by RAAF C130 which was also carrying five coffins which contained Australians killed in action.”

On the 4th Jan 1969 Jim returned to Australia and returned to duty with the Victoria Police.
